I am currently looking for larger diamond @2.2-2.5 ct. My current diamond I have always received many compliments and I have been very happy with it until I ran the cut grading.Want to know what is wrong with it to so that I am more careful this time.It does seem a little smaller than 1ct but it may be my eyes. The statistics are
1.02 ct
6.34-6.48x4.03 mm
total depth- 62.9%
table width-63%
crown height-12%
pavilion depth-46.5%
girdle thickness-very thin to thick
polish/symmetry-good
cutlet-small
clarity-vsI
color-I

Comments -bearded girdle not shown

My current husband paid way to much 7 years ago-$8000.00(someone that friends use)lol, and I am very leary this time but your site has been very helpful and appreciated by me-an average consumer. The only saving grace was I took it to David Atlas in Philadelphia and was told that it is a very beautiful diamond and the approximate price I should have paid. Went back to maul jeweler and did receive 1000.00 back when I told them I was returning it. Still know we paid too much but at that point, it was sentimental because he bought it and was a total surprise. Thank you all so much again

Once a diamond has been given as a gift of love its value becomes greater than the value of a commodity, in direct proportion to the love in the relationship.

But since you are trading it up - here goes...

Scores of 1.00 = tolkowsky ideal proportions. the cut adviser was not quite as harsh

The pavilion depth is too deep and the table is quite large resulting in less edge to edge brilliance.

Since you are in the market..check out the Pricescope tutorial on what you should be looking for this time around. Pay attention to the diameter and depth of the stone...e.g for your stone that you posted on..a 1c stone should have a diameter of around 6.5mm. So if you have something that is 6.4mm average, yes it looks smaller. On the same token if it has a diameter of average 6.65mm, it looks bigger than it should. Both of those scenarios give or take something else in order to achieve or lose diameter. If it has a large table, maybe depth is shallow so you don't get as much fire. Too big of a depth means loss of ctw in the bottom where no one sees it.

Do your research now that you have the time and the inclination and make a smart purchase. Find out what sorts of diameters you should be looking for for the ctw you are looking at. Stay away from too thick girdles...too deep depths (e.g. anything over 62% can be questionable according to some), and too large of a table (e.g. anything over 62% is too big and some may say even 60%+ is too big). Look for excellent or ideal symmetry and polish, or at the very least, very good/very good. Make sure to get crown and pavilion angles to run through the HCA and if you find a stone that could be 'the one', have someone run it through DiamCalc (what Garry posted in this thread...) to see what it looks like.

Your original stone had good color and clarity, keep the I color to save $$ and get a better cut..and keep the VS clarity for a stone over 2c...though you may be able to find a great looking SI1 stone with non-noticeable inclusions or can be hidden under a prong that will again save you more $$ and give you more leeway on a better cut if you don't have to worry as much about it looking clearer etc. I will also note that if your original stone was not that well cut, the I color may have looked more 'colorful' than a really well cut stone will. You will most likely see a difference between your old I colored stone and an excellently cut I colored stone..for the positive!

Good luck and congrats on an exciting new upgrade!...

Mara, Thank you so much for your response. That helped me understand my old diamond-I thought that maybe because it was a vsi was why it looked so good. And your percentage advice is exactly what I was looking for because all the charts do get a little confusing. Was Gary information under the ideal scope forum? Thank you very much again.I feel I will be able to make a better educated selection this time thanks to all of you.
