I want a chunky cushion - none of that crushed ice stuff. But I noticed many of the cushions have a GIA cert. that says it's a modified brilliant (which I know can mean crushed ice). What should I be looking for and how can I make sure I am getting a nice cushion? I am looking only for GIA cert. diamond.

Generally "chunky" cushions are Cushion Brilliant - however that, in itself, is no guarantee.
Photos and video are the best methods to get an idea of how the stone looks if you're shopping online, IMO

If you can see some stones in person, that would be beneficial.

Mine is called an "Old Mine Brilliant" because it has a slightly large culet, crown angles > 40%, and a 50% table. It still has 58 facets (like the Modern Brilliants, and not like the modified brilliants).

Good luck!

To get large "chunky" flashes you need two things:

1) Large pavilion and crown physical facets.
2) Good alignment of facets so that the virtual facets do not break up the physical facets up too much.

You get 1) by choosing Cushion Brilliant on the grading report, this ensures there aren't too many small facets on the crown or pavilion.
You get 2) by working with a vendor who knows how to select cushions for light performance, uses ASET and understands when you say you want a chunky faceted cushion which suppliers to call.

Its relatively easy to find 1) from a virtual vendors, but to find 2) requires a vendor who knows specific suppliers and how to find a "needle in a haystack"
