What do you think of this heart cut sunstone?

I'm having a hard time justifying another loose stone purchase, but I love this little 8.1 x 8mm Oregon sunstone heart. I have a soft spot for sunstones but I'm no expert about them. I could see it as a ring in a very delicate rose gold halo. What do you think?

I love sunstone too!
I tend to go for the more saturated stones with a lot of schiller though.
Have you seen the multi colored with green zones?

Not crazy about the color. Sunstone should be a nice orange or reddish orange color. That looks like washed out sickly yellow. The cutting is nice though.

It is a little hard to tell, but it looks like a very nice sunstone with a touch of red or schiller.

Treenbean: Yes, I like the ones with lots of schiller too, and that's what I normally imagine when I think of sunstone. The best examples I've found of those are cabochons, not faceted stones. There seems to be lots of variation though. I've seen green sunstones and don't care for them, but I don't think I've seen multicolored before. Do you have any pictures you could post?

TL: No, it's not very saturated. Sickly yellow is not what I'm going for though! I e-mailed the seller to ask about the color. It looks a little peachy to me in the picture.

It's not a colour that is normally associated with sunstones; when I think of sunstones, I see a strong orange to reddish orange colour. Sometimes the shiller is strong and sometimes a little muted.

Actually Chrono, that is closer to what you see normally. A light yellow with a section of color. I have about a pound of rough that is lighter than that. A ting of peach or red will do that. You can see rough like that in auctions by ebay sellers Misscrow002, 40edelen, or ledgems (a faceter too). The dark red or green are the rarer stones that go for a premium. (I just looked) Ebay auction 320595038922 (expires Oct1) is a stone that will look very similar to that one when cut.

That's interesting to know. I've been looking at different sunstones for a while now and at first I didn't like the ones that appear transparent. I've gotten used to them and now I'm starting to appreciate both.

BTW, I just added a picture to my profile and now I'm being identified as a "trade person" on my posts. Clearly, this isn't true, but I don't know how it happened and I can't figure out how to change it.

That is a pretty little sunstone. I like the ones with lots of shiller. I wouldn't pay too much for a little sunstone of that color. Rogue Gems specializes in Oregon sunstone, and you can see some facted stones of various colors here and get an idea of prices.

On my better monitor now, it looks more peachy, but still washed out.

not my favorite color for sunstone.

I have three that color that were given to me...they are quite brilliant even if not the ideal color and I like them a lot. They have a subtle personality.

LOL @ sickly yellow. At least it's not corpse gray.

I agree, the color is a little pale but it may look more peachy in person. It looks well-cut, so it may have good dispersion.

Well, it's nice to learn more about a stone I've always liked. ;)) Flygirl, those are so beautiful! Thanks for the link. I'd still like to see anyone's pieces if they're out there.

Although a lot of you don't care for it, something about that little stone charmed me. The color is pale and subtle but it was cut by a master faceter and has a sweetness about it that I like. It isn't very expensive and I put it on free layaway, which will make it seem even less so. Eventually I'd like to have a few different sunstones with and without schiller, representing the range of colors they come in. The red and green ones don't have much appeal for me, but I really like the peachy and orange shades. Thanks for all your feedback :))

I haven't set any of mine but here's one that's a slightly bonkers/crazy stone! It's a confetti Sunstone and it looks like it has a bad case of sparkly measles!

I am not very fond of hearts, but I can see why you like it. The colour reminds me of scapolite (rather straw coloured). Sure, it isn't an example of the best colour of scapolite, but if you like and it is priced right, for the material, then make yourself happy!
