Are french braids appropriate for grown women, are french braids with the bottom pinned under appropriate??

I''m not talking for anything specific, just in general like shopping, maybe work, etc.

I think french braids look put together and classy, personally.

Unless of course you have a ginormous Dora the Explorer bow on the end. Then we might have to talk.

As long as the French braids aren''t done with leg hair, I''m good with them

I think they''re perfectly appropriate...maybe not for a black tie function, but certainly for every-day type activities!

I like french braids an accent...but not as a style.

French braids are up there with scrunchies for me. Appropriate? Sure. Fashionable? Maybe not as much. But seriously, who cares about fashionable when you''re schlepping around town? They''re a jeans and t-shirt look for me, not work.

For me, it depends more on the person''s hair. Really thin, scraggly French braids are just kind of sad, but I think a thick, healthy one is really pretty.

They can look nice and are fairly easy to do. I agree that they''re a bit dated and are not exactly "dressy" though. I wear them myself.

I like French braids, they can look great, but it can look a little dated, depending on how it''s worn. I do like it better as a small side braid rather than braiding the whole head. Just a personal preference though. French twists can look fabulous too, and super easy to do once you get the hang of it.

Lauren Conrad started wearing them on The Hills last season, maybe the season before ... that face framing french braid ... or that around the nape/bun french braid combo. It looks really cute on some people & NOT so cute on others. Hopefully it doesn''t look cute on me because I''m butterfingers when it comes to braiding.

That is so funny you ask this because the other night I french braided my hair and was wondering what happened to the style? It is super easy and can look polished if done right and I use to do it all through college but now I just realized people don't wear them anymore. I really like the look.

Here''s a story about Lauren''s look from 2008.

I like them well enough. I can''t do them on myself though so I rarely wear them.

Not an LC fan but I do love that french braid look. I''ve tried it like 100 times and it always looks AWFUL cause I can''t french braid really well.

I like them on the sides keeping the rest of the hair down... That''s a great look. Kinda like Lauren Conrad.. But if we are talking, french braids then going into pig tail braids? Not loving that for an adult....

I haven''t seen anyone here wearing french braids in ages. DD used to do her hair in Middle school, she was really good doing french braids. She tried to teach me, but my brain or my fingers just couldn''t get it together!!!

I think this version Diane Kruger rocked on the Cannes red carpet was nice ...

I think the traditional one is pretty dated, and I know personally when I do one, I feel like I look like I did in middle school. But heck, I still do french pigtails when working out or doing things like painting, just don''t think it''s the most fashionable way to wear my hair, and if I was trying to "dress to impress" I definitely wouldn''t wear one.

I used to have pretty long hair, so I would french braid it and it got out of the way much better than just putting it in a hair tie. (My hair is btw, of the nice healthy variety)
I donated 12in a while ago, but I would love for my hair to be long enough to braid again without it falling out since my hair is layered. When I go work out sometimes I''ll do a double french braid because it doesn''t fall out when I do two with my medium/short hair- I also wore it that way for track meets (pole vault!)

also, I do like that if a take my shower at night, towel dry my hair, then put it into the braid overnight, in the morning I''ll take it out and have really soft, romantic, wavy tresses

I wear this a lot. Diane Kruger's is pretty, too.

I'm not into classic french braids for myself, but I agree with princesss when it comes to other people.

I like french braids on little girls but not for me.

Thanks for the responses. I was talking to my sis on the phone and she asked what I was doing. I told her I was braiding my hair (and pinning the tail under) because I hadn''t washed it today. She replied, "What, are you 12?" I realize it''s definitely not the look today, but I didn''t think I was going with "12!" This is something I''d wear to run errands, take JT to preschool, go to the store, etc. I think it looks more put together than a ponytail but still quick and easy and out of the way. My hair is curly so it definitely doesn''t look "sleek" but I thought it was sorta cute...

Apparently there are mixed reviews, but since many of you are still okay with it, I''ll continue to wear one occasionally.

Diane Kruger''s hair looks so pretty there!

Vancity~ LOL!!

deco~ Thanks for the interesting links.

I haven''t seen one of these in forever. I would imagine it''s all in how you do it.....

I think it can look very feminine and sexy when long hair is loosely french braided, ends tucked under (or not), and with a few soft tendrils loose and softening the look.

agree. i wear them from time to time. each has to develop their own style. if it works for you who cares if some think it juvenile. life is too short to sweat this stuff.

I had them done by professional hairdressers fifteen to twenty years ago for dressy occasions. They were nice looking (especially with decorative jeweled pins every here and there), but they were alittle tight and severe and they tend to hurt after a few hours. If I could do them myself and make them loose, I''d wear them in the summer time when I like to keep my long hair off my neck and away from my face. Loose with tendrils is pretty I think. Sort of the Greek goddess look.

When my hair was long, I used to do a reverse french braid, and then end it at my neck and let the rest go into a ponytail. This was mostly in college, when I was working at Starbucks, but it did an admirable job of keeping the stuff out of my face, and still looked nice!
