hi everyone,

I was wondering what everyone plans or have already done to their wedding dress. This question is directed especially to those who have been married a while. I've been married 10 years and wondered whether I should sell the dress? I love my dress but don't really know of any practical reason to keep it. I have two young boys and highly doubt my future daughters in law will want to wear it.. Thoughts?

I keep mine in the closet in the spare room. Sometimes when DH is out of town I like to stay in, watch my favorite movies, eat popcorn for dinner, and I wear my dress and veil while doing it all.

We've been married a little over two years.

I'm keeping mine in the closet. I've worn it a couple of times since the wedding- when it ahem, still fit- since it is actually an evening gown not a true wedding dress. And I'm always happy to overdress for any occasion, lol. So I wore it to work once actually. (It's a very very pale greylavender color, with a plain fitted sheath dress and a flared lace jacket over it with hand beading.)

I had mine professionally stored ( if that's possible or some scam I bought into ages ago  )

I have it in my closet with my veil and tiara in another box

Haven, you are too funny! I almost spit Coke all over my monitor when I read your post! I've been married for almost 9 years and mine is in a box in the closet. My mother had it preserved for me and packed in this special box. I do have a daughter, but I can't imagine she'll want to wear it. That said, I can't seem to part with it...not sure why though....

I'm pretty sure that it would still fit, hmmm...ice cream, a movie and my dress and veil.... :naughty:

Oh Haven, you are making me want to go find mine, watch a movie and just have fun....

We just celebrated our 24th. I did have it cleaned, and preserved. It's in a box somewhere... Attic I think?? When we moved here, we had been married for 10 years, so said to the movers. Yeah put it in the attic.

DD is wayyyyyy taller than me, so no chance she could wear it.. Plus I wouldn't want her to.

If there wasn't a HUGE heavy bureau blocking the pull down attic stairs I would go look for it..

It wasn't a typical 80's dress. It would be very much in style today... Proud of that!!! :cheeky:

I wish everyone lived near me--I'd invite you all to the white party I've been planning for ages! Picture it: All of us PS ladies in our wedding dresses, eating white food, drinking white wine, listening to a playlist with all of our first dance songs on it. OHHHHHH yeah.

You're the best!

Haven you made me laugh out loud for completely different reasons. Two years after we were married, I decided to try my wedding dress on (after my parents had it "professionally" sealed) and wore it around the house.. even vacuumed in it. I always felt pretty and like a princess in it so it was great... UNTIL...DH came home early and caught me walking around in my wedding dress. I looked ridiculous and he still jokes that he thought I would be boiling rabbits soon after that incident. Fast forward to 8 years later and two small children. The boys got their halloween costumes early and were dying to surprise daddy when he got home. The boys thought I looked silly without a costume so they suggested I wear my "princess dress". I was more than happy to oblige so DH this time came home to two sons dressed as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Optimus Prime and his wife in her wedding dress. He just turned around and walked out the door again.. aahh.. good times!

I keep eyeing all that silk and think, you know, I wonder if this could be changed into something useful...

Mine is still stored in the top of my mother's dressing room closet, where it has been for the past 15 years. The last time we visited, I did pull it out to show the kids. Next time we drive down rather than fly, I'll bring it back. I'd like to have it at my own house!

That's priceless!
I like to vacuum while wearing my veil, too. I don't care if DH is around when I do that, though. I *do* wait for him to go out of town for my movie and popcorn in a dress dates with myself, though.

Thanks, Autumn!

I am not married yet (7 weeks or so)... but am wondering if I should just donate mine??? Or keep it? I think that if I donated it, I would feel good about that, but might regret it.

Mine is in my closet, and I'm kinda like Haven and Agapitor . I have a little ritual where I try it on every year on my anniversary, and prance around a little, put on my veil, and play dress-up with my daughter. I want to keep it as a "size gage" to see if I can fit into the same size I was when I first got married. It's been 10 years, and so far so good!

Mine's in the closet. I get it out and look at it sometimes-no way would it fit anymore. There are stains on the front of it from something, and I'm not sure what. My daughter likes to get it out and beg to try it on. I've got another one too that ended up not being able to be altered properly..I'm kinda hoping when she gets married we can combine the two and someone can make a new dress for her.

Oh that would be soooo fun!!! All of us would have a blast!!!! :wavey:

I wanted to say that I have my mom's (first) wedding dress too, right next to mine- she was married to my dad in 1969 IIRC, and made her own blue velvet micro mini dress. I wore it to my prom in the early '90s with fishnets and some '40s platform heels. I went with my sister and another girl friend and we were like... the only people who danced at all, and there was this huge article in the school paper right after about The Horrible Lesbians That Ruined The Dance. I wondered who on earth had extrapolated *that*?! Apparently they didn't realize we were related!

Uhm, I gotta ask.

Do you have any friends who have "done it" while wearing their wedding dress? :naughty:

DH and I have been married for 11 years. My dress was never preserved, just hanging in a bag in a wardrobe in the basement. A few months ago we got sewer backup in our basement. My dress was ruined but I never really got upset. If you can think of something like that happening and it not being a big deal, I'd sell it and try to get a few bucks. If the thought of a sh!tty dress breaks your heart, hang on to it.

I did try it on on our 10 yr anni and it still fit, that's the 2nd best memory!

I've been married just shy of a year and I already know what I am going to do with mine. I'm saving it to create baptism gowns for our children using parts of the fabric when that time comes :)

I was just going to suggest this! I had heard of this and thought it was a wonderful, thoughtful and USEFUL idea that could be used time and time again.
:appl: :appl: :appl:

You aren't going to get more than $50 to $100 selling it unless it is a vintage designer dress. I suggest donating it to a charity like Bridal Garden in NYC.

Okay, I really hate to admit this, but I actually lost my dress. After our wedding two years ago, my mom took it back home with her to get cleaned (and preserved, I think). When we got back from our honeymoon, my mom told me that it was at the cleaners and I should pick it up. Well, this is horrible, but I kept forgetting about it, and then I couldn't remember which cleaner my mom had used. I was so embarrassed but I knew my mom would be furious if I admitted to waiting so long to pick up my dress. I never told her...I did call around to many cleaners (and I also dropped by in person) but no one seemed to have it.

:nono:

Some suggestions..

-Use fabric from it to make a garter, mantilla veil, or something else for your future DIL.
-A good friend of mine had her FMIL's dress altered to be more current and wore it. It could happen!
-Baptism gowns for grandbabies
-Cover a wedding album with the fabric

I don't think you would make much of a profit off a ten year old style, sorry!

I decided to preserve and save mine in case I ever had a daughter (it was very simple - plain white silk, strapless, with an a-line chapel-length skirt. Easy to alter or embellish if she wanted it).

However, 4 years later, I have two sons, and we don't want to have any more children. So, maybe someday I would offer it to my future daughter-in-laws, or even grandaughters, but I don't know if they would want it.

I would like to take it out & try it on every year to see if it still fits (I was 3 & a half months pregnant when I got married, so I was 5 pounds above my regular weight - I would hope that would make it reasonable that I still fit into it) but since I paid over $100 to have the fabric treated & preserved, I don't think I'm supposed to take it out of the box. Maybe for our 5th anniversary next year (after I've lost my baby weight) I should try it on anyway & see if it still fits, especially since I'm not saving it for anyone in particular anomore ...

My MIL had my dress preserved for me. It is in a box (with a little window in it if I want to see it) in my attic. I know it's silly to hang on to it just to do nothing with it, but I love it and I want to keep it just as it is. Perhaps a daughter or granddaughter will want it, or can have it re-made to suit their taste...

The only thing I have heard of people that have used it as baptism dresses but it seems that you are past that age. LOL, I sold mine online for nothing. I have heard of others that have donated them which is a really great idea- some people can't afford dresses and I wish I would have thought about that. :)

I preserved mine, and kept it for 10 (not so happy) years. I gave it to my ex in the divorce to sell or trash. It's sitting in his living room still, which I'm sure his new gf is just thrilled about. :?

thanks for all your input ladies.. well.. Halloween is coming so I think I'll hang on to mine and perhaps give it one more go with the kiddies. Will probably eventually donate it to a charity or a relative in the Philippines.
