Hello everyone, I have been a daily reader of PS for quite some time now, researching and learning what to look for in a diamond and stay in my budget. I live in NYC and have been shopping around for a few months now. I have been referred to a dealer in Texas and have been presented the opportunity to purchase the following diamond for approximately $7,300:

GIA certified (I have been provided a scan of the certificate)
round
6.95 x 6.98 x 4.09
1.21 carat
VS1
G color
Good cut
Very good polish
Very good symmetry
No flour
No culet
60% table

The diagram of the diamond reveals several small inclusions, mostly on the side. The key indicates that they are little needle marks, and one small crystal inclusion. I can forward the scan if anyone would like to review it.

Does anything here strike anyone as a concern I should consider? I think the price is pretty reasonable but would like to get the Board''s opinion on this. If there is any info I should add like degree angles please let me know.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this as I am nearing a decision soon. I have read countless threads of people asking the same kind of questions and admire the candid and honest responses. Thank you in advance for your help!

Edit

Can you post all info on the plot diagram or the gia cert number... if the girdle is just past sl-thick it may not be an issue though it's still not preferable

inclusions in a vs1 of that size are not a problem. The problem with this stone is exactly what is causing it to have "good" cut grade

yes you might want to look for a higher cut grade to maximize the sparkle of the diamond

Ditto.

Post the GIA report number.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. The certificate number is: 2105762301.

Yup, it's that crown/pavilion combo w/ that table that's giving it the "good" grade.

Ditto SC

I know that cut is very important, and I think that has been hanging me up a bit on this diamond. I haven''t seen it in person yet. I am flying to Houston to visit family in two weeks, and will check out the stone then. Do you think that given the cut and the price, this is a stone I should pass up nevertheless?

On an unrelated note, does anyone have any other dealer in Houston they''d recommend?

In houston, make an appointment with Brian Gavin and with Whiteflash. their diamonds rock and customer service is amazinh--but they mostly do online orders, so from what I hear, don''t expect a retail/showroom experience.

what is your budget/size preference/color/clarity preference?

budget: around $7k
size: 1.2+
color: G, H
clarity: VS2 or better

i would pay more for clarity, obviously. i didn''t really consider how cut factors in, however. everyone''s input has been very helpful.

i''ll check out brian gavin and whiteflash now, thank you! it sounds like other readers have had good experiences with them both.

This is *all* I would do. They are both great.

I will warn you that if you want a truly superiour cut and 1.2ct G VS2, you are looking at paying closer to $9500. An H VS2 will be slightly less. Something will need to be compromised in your desired specs if you want the best cut. You can save a fair bit of money by looking for a non H&A diamonds that is still ideal proportions.

Something like this is what I would suggest: http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2270389.htm Not the highest cut yo ucan get, but pretty darn good. Notice it is still above your price point though.

You can make your money go much further if you go to an eye celan SI1, but it is up to you.

Is this a better alternative than the one I was originally offered? This one is about $250 more:

That is a virtual diamond meaning that it is not "in house", and so it is a hassel to get information about the stone. See the one I posted for an example of an in house diamond. With whiteflash stick to their Expert Selection and Premium Select lines to find in house diamonds.

Pavilion might be a little to shallow, probably have obstruction issue.
This is what we call a '' shallow shallow'' crown and pavilion combo, there is a chance of obstruction as Stone notes. Obstruction can be seen as visible darkening of a diamond when it is viewed closely, this can be a problem sometimes if these stones are set in rings as the viewer''s head or body can block the light to the diamond. I would not want to proceed with this diamond without having an expert inspect the stone for this.

Just catching up on a bit of reading, and I did want to reassure Mr. P that if he''s thinking about making a trip to visit, we actually do have settings he can view.

Bella''s right that we aren''t a "traditional" style showroom stocked with various lines of settings, but generally we do have a sample of all our catalog offerings so visitors can see them in person, and we do regularly schedule appointments for client visits.

alison d., i''ll be in houston this weekend. is WF open for a visit? i''ve viewed the website and saw a few stones that are aligned with the specs that i want in my price range. how would i get in touch with you? thanks for your help, everyone!

i''ve decided to pass on the shallow stone, and will eventually choose a stone with a better cut thanks to your comments, PS. will keep you all posted on my hunt.

You can call to make an appointment but I don''t know if they are open on weekends? www.whiteflash.com has the phone number.

BGD is in the same building so might as well pay them a visit too and see what they have www.briangavindiamonds.com They are open Sundays in the am, but are closed on Saturday.
