Well.....

He has been reloading ammunition one bullet at a time on a garage sale reloader for years. I bought him a Dillon progressive reloader now he can pull the handle and a bullet comes out complete each time. It is just as romantic as a crossbow. But he is going to just about keel over when he sees it. I love making him happy.

Bought him the fancy ass Nespresso coffee machine he's been salivating over for years and had his grandfather's WWII medals framed.

Framing the medals was probably the most stressful and difficult thing I've ever done in my life. They were living in a Tupperware container in the bottom of a cupboard somewhere and the medals had all come undone from their ribbons and did you know that not only is each ribbon particular to that specific medal, there's actually a specific order in which they should be displayed? Well, I'm sure you all do because this is Pricescope and you're all sophisticated and educated people but I didn't. So I had to find a medal expert (difficult).

Medal expert gave me a TON of interesting info on the old man, told me in which order to frame the medals, named them all for me, told me one medal is missing, the medal I had was actually an Italian medal (how the old man got hold of that is anyone's guess) and should not be framed. He was able to source a replacement medal that had actually been issued to a colored soldier! How awesome is that?! It only arrived after the framed had finished, hence the blank space.

Framer messed up the layout a bit and they've already closed for the year but I'll get him to redo it in the new year when he slots in the new one.

Way more excited about this than some coffee machine,

You're right, there is no shortage of rules concerning medals, ribbons and other commendations; who can wear them, how and when to wear them, etc.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but even the colours of the ribbons are symbolic. You may be interested in the following which pertains to the medals you've framed (assuming I've correctly identified them).

From left to right:
1939-45 Star; The three equal stripes represent the Royal and Merchant Navies (dark blue), the Army (red), and the Royal Air Force (light blue).
Africa Star; The colours represent the desert, army, navy, and air force.
Italy Star; The colours represent the colours of the Italian flag.
Defence Medal; The orange (flame colour) represents the enemy attacks on the (green) British Isles and the black stripes represent the black-outs during the war years.
War Medal; The colours represent the Union Jack.

Please forgive me for being a detail nut but, since you plan on re-framing the medals, you might want to flip the first medal (if it is the 1939-45 Star), so that the dark blue stripe is on the left as you look at it. (When worn, the dark blue stripe is to be furthest from the left shoulder.)

My SO's birthday is on Christmas Day, so it's double duty for me.

Birthday:
A first edition of his favorite book.

Christmas:
-Broncos jersey
-a code to design your own game controller
-a playful watercolor + drawing of us in our backyard with our pets. This sounds silly now, but I saw the artist on Instagram and she said she would do it for a song. I thought it would be smaller (like for his desk/office) but it's more like a sheet of paper in size.
-a hat from his alma mater

We will also do stockings. In his I put candy, a rubik's cube, a pizza gc, beard oil, trail mix, socks/underwear, and I forget what else.

We're going to have a look around in the new year once we have moved and I have settled into my new job and we are wanting something like that. We're not majorly worried about gifts this year due to our circumstances at the moment, we're more worried about looking after my wife's sister and saving for a new rental (all on a single wage). All isn't lost though as we have a nice BBQ feast sorted for xmas day!

I've been thinking about getting one of the opals I have cut at home set into a plain band but the softness of opal and my tendency to knock my hands around keeps holding me back

yes, it sounds like you are focusing on what is most important, which is family and loved ones, for Christmas. It is easy to get distracted with all the commercialism, but being there for loved ones is the most important. I love opals, but yes if you are someone who works a lot with your hands (as it sounds like you do) opal would not be the best choice for a band you are going to be wearing every day. I also like the idea of a silver or tungsten band if you cannot find your original.

Whew, that's a relief! I thought it was 50/50 that you'd either be happy to know or would give me an eye-roll and ask if I had nothing better to do. The internet has a lot of information on medals/stars which, by the way, describe the 'front' and 'back' of the medal. Yup, the medal/star is to facing a certain way, too. Just google the name of the medal and check out the official government sites; not the sites that sell medals.

Jordy, just wanted to say I'm sorry you're going through a bit of a rough time right now and your PS friends are always here for you - the best and most important thing about the holidays is spending time with loved ones, and just appreciating one another. Geez, Jordy, that's too much stuff to deal with in a short time period!
You and your DW will, of course, get through it.

As part gypsy noted, Christmas has gotten so commercialized. Its important to focus on what really matters.

You might want to consider making a card for your DW. My SO was speechless and floored by a card I'd made for his 45th birthday. Warning, sugar overload ahead: the title on the cover page (yes, the card had a number of pages) said '45 Kisses and 45 Reasons I Love You', followed by a list of 45 reasons, each followed by a lipsticked kiss (you might want to skip that part, Jordy), with a tissue-like page (I forget the name of the paper) between each to prevent the lipstick from smudging the previous page (something to consider if you do decide to pucker up with lipstick and kiss each page ).

You're sworn to secrecy about my SO getting that card. He's a manly combat soldier who hunts and growls - he'd get no end of ribbing if word of this got out!

If you want to do something like this for Christmas, you could do '7 Christmases and 7 Reasons I Love You', or whatever number of Christmases this has been for you and your DW.

Plain paper, construction paper, produced on a printer or handwritten in gel pens or simply pen, it doesn't matter. As for coming up with reasons, I quickly came up with more than 45. I have no doubt that you love your DW for her caring heart, encouragement, supporting you, doing little things for you, etc.
