What are the biggest factors that effect the "fire" of a square cut diamond? Specifically aschers and princess cuts? I understand the four "c"s well enough butt to determine how the diamond will react with light, effecting the colorful "fire" is another story altogether.

The cut goes a long way in all diamonds of various shapes. The quick and short answer is that a steeper crown angle (in relation to the pavilion) means a higher crown height which allows white light to enter and return (broken up) as coloured light.

If you''re asking how to determine the light performance on a square cut, you need an ASET or Idealscope image.

I believe, ASET image evaluates both direct light reflection and indirect light reflection coming from the diamond in different colors. Idealscope images are less precise - just direct light reflection as red, indirect light reflection as pinkish, and no light reflection as black. (I think, but someone can correct me if wrong)

You want a good mix of direct, and no light reflection. In order to create patterning and contrast.

Unlike rounds, there isn''t a guarantee on light performance for asschers based on numbers and angles.

For princesses, I believe that AGS0s are better than 90% of princess cuts out there. (whiteflash has a nice selection). If you don''t want to pour over images, those diamonds are a good bet.

You can post the ASET images here, and pricescopers can help you evaluate them!

I just got a Princess of Hearts from Good Old Gold and that thing is ON FIRE baby! Jonathan said all the PoHs perform that way.

I am sorry I know nothing about Aschers. But I do know that for Princess Cut Stones you might need to see in person unless your getting from Whiteflash A Cut Above (ACA Princess), AGS 0(still might have to plug the numbers), Square Hearts and Arrow (which mirrors a Round Brillant in a Square), you can look at Goodoldgold.com, Princess of Hearts (has clipped corners and I believe almost equal to Square Hearts and Arrow) I personally like Princess of Hearts because I don''t like the Princess Corners and with Princess Cut Stones the tend to look smaller than what they are so with the cut corners it fixes that problem. That''s my understanding of Princesses please correct me if I am wrong.

Also Whiteflash has X-Factor which has Princess with Clipped Corners.

I think Aschers are very pretty and have a unique look but do not sparkly like a well cut Princess.

They are very different looks-- one is a step cut the other a brilliant cut, you shoudl REALLY REALLY go to a high end store (preferably one that carries Daniel K) and see them both in person. Chrono''s answer is the most accurate.

I would advise for you to look at Princess of Hearts, Square Hearts and Arrows, and well cut cushions if you like brilliant cut square-ish shapes.

Actually, an asscher is what I''d love but apparently they are much more rare to find in retail stores. I live in Philadelphia, minutes away from the second largest mall in america in King of Prussia, and a few minutes away from "diamond row" in the city.

Can anyone recommend a good place or two to start at that may have some good ascher examples (locally)?

I appreciate all of the responses!
