What Americans spend on an engagement ring by state

Wyoming comes in at 21.

Indiana=15. I’m kind of shocked, tbh. I’d have thought Hoosiers spent far less.

Ca. #1. and this was in 2005.
I spent too much. I'm gonna ask my wife to refund me the difference in cash!:$$): . Adjusted for inflation she owes me a lot of money.

#24 All the discretionary funds for these diamonds are swallowed by property taxes.

In Canada, sources say the average cost of engagement ring is $4000. I find that hard to believe just going by what I'm seeing out there and among my kid's contemporaries. Maybe it's because our economy isn't great and people tend to buy at mall stores and finance the cost. Both things I definitely wouldn't do.

Interesting article thanks @StephanieLynn. Doesn't surprise me. As a group PSers are not "average" in many ways.8)

California at #1 doesn't surprise me. I see large bling everywhere I go!

#44, New Mexico............$5089? No way.
People in this state would rather spend money on tires for the pickup truck, or install new carpeting.
Engagement rings tend to be small here. In fact, alot of women are wearing rings that were Mom's or Grandma's. So the bride didn't get to go diamond shopping, and the guy gets off easy.
I rarely see anything over 1 ct.
I go to a lot of events, and I am always looking at hands.
As a matter of fact, last night I attended a gala for our Philharmonic, and the largest diamond I could find was about 2 cts, on the hand of an older lady.

If you think about brick and mortar store prices, not the Kay's specials, I think these are reasonable. $5,000 which is my parent's state, would get you a 0.50 to 0.75 RB in a platinum halo at Jared. I chose specs based on what I notice in RT. Usually people ask if a H or G is too yellow so I went higher - F SI1. With the number of people who know nothing about diamonds and want "the best" but don't comparison shop I think they could very easily walk into Jared or Shane and get exactly what they asked for at these prices but not end up with a large or quality diamond. These prices seem a lot but they really don't get you far, no 1+ carats for sure!

+1 :cry2:

There were a lot of surprises on that list.

I'm surprised NY is so low at #11. I think there may be a huge difference in NYC and the rest of the state. Or maybe I'm just surrounded by wealthy peope lol. Even the cashier at target was wearing a huge ring. My husband spent way too little in my case! Lol:D

Interesting! I guess I’m a little surprised that CA beat out NY. I’m surprised TX was not higher. But it seems CA was the only one in the $10K range. My poor DH said, what a deal! What are they buying? He has been brainwashed by PS.

I'm a CA girl so just to hit average, my partner underspent by a factor of 3! Time to hit the shops! However, this study was conducted by Ritani. So it's not like they have no skin in the game. It's in the company's interest to spread the idea that the average spend is high. Is this just based on data from their brand sales? Are they factoring in all the men and women who get plain bands, or no bands, or non diamond center stone rings? I always wonder what the data collection method is for these kinds of studies.

I agree.
Mall stores, department stores, pawn shops, Craig's list, eBay......how could they possibly know enough to come up with these numbers?
Take this article with a grain of salt.

I was kind of shocked that there was such a difference in TN (37th) and AL (16th)... but I guess the actual amounts are very similar at $6116 and $7521. I was also shocked that GA's average was less than AL's... maybe it's because we have a Diamonds Direct in the Birmingham area?? ;)

NC is number 2, wow

Wow. Americans spend a lot more on engagement rings than Canadians, I think. Our average is $4000 CAD according to one site, which would be about $3100 USD. And even that would probably be high where I live. Other places are more flashy though.

My very first engagement ring in 1980 was $250. I picked the cheapest one available from a downtown LA mart jeweler. Oh my gosh was it awful. DH has way made up for it. It must have become more expense in the last few years in CA because when I got engaged no one I knew had expensive rings. Of course, that was eons ago.
