I am hoping to get a pair of diamond studs in the upcoming months and I think I will get the 3 prong martini setting. I see that WF has two styles, the heavy martini and the regular. I assume I would prefer the regular but does anyone here have the heavy set? Are they just bulkier or are they made for larger diamonds? I will get about 1.5 ctw. Any comments on the two choices would be greatly appreciated. Here are the two links. I will not get the ready set go pairs but will choose the diamonds myself. Well okay, not all by myself

. One would think I would pick up some usefull knowledge about rounds after sticking around here quite a while but I will need all you PSers help. I do think I will go with ACAs from WF. BTW, are the H&As ACAs all AGS 000? That seems to be the case but I don't see is specifically spelled out on the site.

Hi Jazmine,

I am actually in the process to get a martini stud myself. I talked to my rep at WF, and they told me the difference between the heavy and the normal martini is that the heavy one is hand made. Im not sure why they would even offer two types of the same setting but made a different way. Allthough the heavy martini is cheaper by a bit.

As for the ACA, Yes they are all have to be AGS 000, meaning having an ideal polish and symmetry. Good luck on finding the right pair.

So, the heavy are hand made and cheaper? That is interesting. Which are you going to get?

I actually wondered about the difference myself. I think Katie at WF told me that the regular martini settings sit lower to the ear than the heavy ones. I already planned to get the regular martini settings so I didn''t go into any more details about the differences. It seems like most people get the regular ones. Maybe someone with the heavy ones would post pics and earshots, which might help for comparison.

Did you notice the heavy is 14kt and regular one is 18kt gold? hence the price difference. I have the regular in platinum as to me it looked neater. ie. less bulky

Jazmine, I think im getting the normal setting. Yeah as hoocares said, it does sit lower than the heavy one, and I am just trying to avoid the droop factor. As for the 14kt maybe its an easier metal to mold since its handmade not sure

Lisa, How much did it cost you to upgrade to platinum? I wasa thinking of going that route but decided not to since I am not sure how much of a difference it would make. Now that you mention its gonna be less bulkier I am thinking about it again

Jazmine, I have the heavy martinis. I will try to find my thread with pics and link it for you. I love mine, and I don't know if I would notice a dif between the two unless I saw them side by side.

I have the hand made martini setting. They don''t look heavy at all and sit close to my ear. I love them!!!

Rockymountain,
They cost $420 compared to $220 for .5tcw- mine are .33 each- way back in March before the jump in platinum prices so I don''t know if this would be a current price. They are so nice at WF so I encourage you to ask.

Thanx Lisa

I think you have it backwards. The website says that the 18k settings are the handmade ones. The heavy ones are what they have on their "ready-set-go" earrings and I think those are not handmade and cost less. So the 18k handmade ones are the nicer quality of the two.

I would think that the heavy ones would sit lower, not the smaller ones. I don''t want the earrings to droop.

Anyone have plat. 3 prong martinins? Are they quite heavy?

Also, any recommendation about the backs? Are screw-on backs the best?

I have the 18 kt handmade Martini''s. No matter how loose I''ve put them, no drooping! They just sit there, as if suspended on your ear lobe. And if you put them in tighter, they simply nestle into your lobe. I LOVE them.

I had a previous pair of studs with screw backs, and couldn''t decide whether to get them again, or go with the heavy friction back. I finally chose the latter, after being assured no one had problems with losing one. They are very tight, and there is an indented place near the back of the post, so if the back does get that far, it snaps into place.

I can''t weigh in on the distinction between WF''s handmade and regular martini settings but I do want to chime in as a BIG fan of martinis in general. I traded in my 1.02 ctw G/SI1 studs in four-prong, screw backs for 1.71 ctw H/SI2''s. I thought I just wanted the larger stones in a four-prong, screw back setting -- mainly because I thought this was "safer."

My jeweler convinced me to try the martinis with the hard "snap" closure. She said that the threading on screw backs can become "stripped" over a long period of time (similar to the way this would happen on a regular household screw) and that they should be checked periodically for this reason. Anyway, I tried the martinis with the "snap" and here are the benefits I found:

1. They do not droop -- at all. The 1.71''s sit more flush to my earlobe than the 1.02''s did!

2. I like the fact that the smooth posts are not as large as the screw backs. Sometimes my screw backs made my earlobes sore.

3. The stones look bigger to me. (Well, duh. . .they are!) But what I mean is the three prong martinis show more stone and I think they look bigger for their size.

Congratulations and good luck with your purchase!

Mine are platinum with the heavy friction back and though they have a nice weight when cupped in my hand for cleaning I seriously can''t feel them when I''m wearing them but mine are only .33 each. I chose platinum because of the hypoallergenic factor.
