Again!
Now that our whole house is lovely and healthy and everyone is getting along beautifully, it felt like time to shake things up again.
Meet Turtledove, the newest family member, stuck in quarantine:
And look at her beautiful baby bump:
Her backstory is...interesting. She was seen wandering around a complex of rental units, and a lady took her in and started feeding her. That was very nice of her, but I got some seriously bad feelings from the woman on the phone. She mentioned how her cat had kittens last year, but then said she only has one male kitten now, and her sister's cat had kittens, and her other sister's dog had puppies. But they're all HUGE animal lovers, of course.
The one thing that really stuck out was the fact that her cat had kittens, the first was born breech, and the mother 'instantly rejected' it. So the lady put the newborn kitten in BED with her to try to keep it warm. It died.
Needless to say, I was really keen to get my hands on this girl before she gave birth, in order to give all of the kittens the best chance of survival.
I picked her up this evening. The house was like nothing I had ever seen before, it was like walking through a minefield. Dishes covering every surface of the kitchen, rotten food on all of them. Flies everywhere, mouse droppings on the floor, just unbelievable. A tv was BLARING, plus a stereo was BLARING, plus her kid SCREAMED everything she said. The cat was hiding under the bed of said child, a little girl who looked to be about 3. There were POOPY undies all over this girl's floor.
The mother kept saying really endearing things, like telling the girl to 'shut the f up, you little shit.' The whole experience made me feel yuck, especially since the little girl looked suspiciously like a FAS child.
I got the cat and got out. Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful she took care of the cat - she said she was skin and bones when she first started feeding her a couple of weeks ago. And it was absolutely the right thing to do when she realized the cat was pregnant and contacted the local rescue groups. For that, she is a wonderful person. But for the rest of it? It was an unpleasant experience for me. I was so, so, so very glad to get our Turtledove out of there, into a quiet, calm household where she can settle in and give birth stress-free (never thought of my zoo as calm before, but now I have a point of reference when it comes to true chaos!).
I don't know how far along she is. She's not particularly big, but she herself is a very small, fine-boned cat. I can feel and see the kittens moving. I suspect it is a small litter and she'll give birth in a week or so.
And what would a new addition be without a health issue? She has ear mites.
Hey, at least it's not ringworm...
