Again!

Now that our whole house is lovely and healthy and everyone is getting along beautifully, it felt like time to shake things up again.

Meet Turtledove, the newest family member, stuck in quarantine:

And look at her beautiful baby bump:

Her backstory is...interesting. She was seen wandering around a complex of rental units, and a lady took her in and started feeding her. That was very nice of her, but I got some seriously bad feelings from the woman on the phone. She mentioned how her cat had kittens last year, but then said she only has one male kitten now, and her sister's cat had kittens, and her other sister's dog had puppies. But they're all HUGE animal lovers, of course. The one thing that really stuck out was the fact that her cat had kittens, the first was born breech, and the mother 'instantly rejected' it. So the lady put the newborn kitten in BED with her to try to keep it warm. It died. Needless to say, I was really keen to get my hands on this girl before she gave birth, in order to give all of the kittens the best chance of survival.

I picked her up this evening. The house was like nothing I had ever seen before, it was like walking through a minefield. Dishes covering every surface of the kitchen, rotten food on all of them. Flies everywhere, mouse droppings on the floor, just unbelievable. A tv was BLARING, plus a stereo was BLARING, plus her kid SCREAMED everything she said. The cat was hiding under the bed of said child, a little girl who looked to be about 3. There were POOPY undies all over this girl's floor. :knockout: The mother kept saying really endearing things, like telling the girl to 'shut the f up, you little shit.' The whole experience made me feel yuck, especially since the little girl looked suspiciously like a FAS child. :nono:

I got the cat and got out. Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful she took care of the cat - she said she was skin and bones when she first started feeding her a couple of weeks ago. And it was absolutely the right thing to do when she realized the cat was pregnant and contacted the local rescue groups. For that, she is a wonderful person. But for the rest of it? It was an unpleasant experience for me. I was so, so, so very glad to get our Turtledove out of there, into a quiet, calm household where she can settle in and give birth stress-free (never thought of my zoo as calm before, but now I have a point of reference when it comes to true chaos!).

I don't know how far along she is. She's not particularly big, but she herself is a very small, fine-boned cat. I can feel and see the kittens moving. I suspect it is a small litter and she'll give birth in a week or so. :))

And what would a new addition be without a health issue? She has ear mites. Hey, at least it's not ringworm...

omg... that cat is probably the most beautiful cat I've ever seen. She's amazing! I hope everything goes well with the birth and kittens!

Yikes.

I think the first thing on my mind would be to report that woman to child protective services. No child should live like that.

What a pretty girl the cat is! And what a break in life she got, to go from the street and from that house, to your caring home!

You truly are a good samaritan for the animals..

as for the humans that potentially live like animals....... :angryfire: :angryfire: that poor child, makes me angry that her daughter is living in those conditions and to be spoken to like that.....the mind just boggles...

I am just so glad that i was no where near that or i would have let slip what i thought of the situation.... i know that i am not in their shoes and not understanding their circumstances... but still, there has to be a level of cleanliness, repect in the HOME.

i just tear up reading how that house was just like filth....

i am so glad that our little miss will NEVER be living in that condition.

BTW what is FAS? sorry for ignorance...

I'm guessing FAS is like a children's home/ volunteer person??? Regardless I would report EVERYTHING you saw and heard to someone ASAP about that little girl

No, FAS is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. There are some characteristic physical traits of children whose mothers drink while pregnant.

I suspect that this woman is already known by relavent authorities. I think she lives on state assistance. To be honest, I am still processing the experience.

Edit: to be fair, one of the landmines I tripped over was a vacuum, and I think she was in the process of cleaning up. Hence the blaring electronics. She said something about having been away, so I wonder if she had a sibling or something watching the house, and trashed it. Giving her the benefit of the doubt here. But that doesn't erase all the "shut up!" and "get the hell out of the way!"s that the kid copped while I was there. Even as I was getting in the car, she was holding the girl, instructing her to say goodbye to the cat. The girl said, "Bye mummy!", so was a bit confused. The mother responded, "She's not taking YOU, I don't think anyone wants YOU." :nono:

I agree. This woman should be reported. The child is being abused, at least verbally. I think she was making an attempt to clean up because you were coming over. My heart is breaking for that child. She needs to be out of that environment.

It's super incredible that you rescued the cat.

Please, PLEASE call whomever you need to in order to rescue that child. I can hardly breathe after reading your story. That child deserves better. That mother needs help too.

It isn't a matter of getting people into trouble. It is a matter of getting people the help they need. Rat droppings and fecal matter all over the house speaks of an inability to care for oneself and their children.

With love.

Please please please call child services. That poor girl is being abused, her health is in danger, and you can help!
You would report abuse and neglect of an animal, please help this little girl.

Oh wow, it sounds like something from a movie. Something I never would think to see in real life.

Thank you rescuing the cat. You are such an important person to the animal community.

Ditto. Even if she is known to the authorities, new info could help them. As you said, you don't know the situation--she could be one step away from losing custody and your report could help the child more than you would know. Glad you got the cat out of there!

Oh Ginger, I am so sorry you had to witness this, but my heart breaks for that little girl. You know what her life is destined to be in the absence of intervention...so the cycle continues :nono: :(sad

Woops, just realized I didn't say anything about your new bundle of joy! She is gorgeous and its hard to believe that you think she's only a week away. Eegads, she's skinny! Once again, yay for SuperGinger!

Gorgeous cat

definitely call child protective services

I need to investigate the proper way of going about making a report. Having not grown up here, I'm not familiar with the names of organizations or their functions - I have to ask coworkers today. And I'm going to wait a few days first. This woman has all my contact details, including a vague idea of where I live. :errrr:
