Hey ladies,

I am considering getting wedding insurance but I would love to know how many of you have either:

1. Thought about getting it
2. Already bought it
3. Did buy it
4. Skipped it or never heard of it

I would really appreciate any stories or advice that go with your answer.

Thanks!

PS I am not quite sure how the poll thing works so sorry if it doesn''t come out quite right...

I had my wedding a private residence and I was required to buy it. We had coverage for 2 million dollars and it cost us I believe, something in the 3-400 dollar range.

The only think I''m really concerned about is my honeymoon, since I''ll be in Cabo, Mexico at the end of hurricane season. I might end up buying traveler''s insurance. Other than that, I don''t think I''ll consider any other kind of wedding insurance.

We''re required to have coverage for one million dollars at our venue (government land - former army barracks turned artist studios). They included a brochure for a company they frequently work with, so I believe it''ll cost us a little under $200.

Parrot, are you getting married on the Presidio in San Francisco? I lived there as a kid when my dad was in the Army. Do you have pics of your venue?

We bought 1-day, $1 million event coverage for $50 through State Farm. It was required by our venue.

You have to be a current State Farm customer so we switched our renters insurance to them in the year prior to our wedding, as they were actually cheaper than our previous renter's insurance company. They also do car insurance obviously, but our car insurance would have been higher through them so we only moved the renters.

Thought I'd through that out there for others in the same situation.

Otherwise, stand alone policies were ~$200-250 for the same thing.

I am also considering insurance... The one I am interested in is one that covers loss of money in the unlikely event that someone is sick, or if someone dies, if a vendor doesn't show, if your dress gets ruined etc.... There is also extra liability insurance (e.g. if someone damages the venue). For our wedding it will cost us about 700 to insure everything.

I think there are two different types of insurance the posters are talking about. The venue required insurance is usually **liability** insurance, while I assume the OP means wedding insurance in case someone dies, is sick, natural disaster, etc. Correct? Or do you mean ANY type of insurance?

Ooooooh. Oops. Yeah, I got liability insurance, required by my venue in case I, my guests, or vendors wrecked the place.

Not cold feet insurance.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE buy wedding insurance.

I should know...my father lost 20k on my reception when our venue went bankrupt. We had the hearing on Monday, and we are not getting ANY money back. If you search my posted threads, you will see the whole story. I''m still sick to my stomach over it.

It is so worth it. I bought it (for the second reception) through Wedsafe. It was something around 200 dollars.

The economy is in too risky of a state to NOT get insurance!!!!!

P.S.

Wedsafe offers liability insurance and personal protection insurance (I think that''s what it''s called) I would get both...it''s not that much to do both.

If your venue flakes out, you are covered. If your crazy cousin gets drunk and burns the curtains, you are covered. If your hairdresser never shows up to your hotel room, you are covered.

Trip insurance is another think I would recommend getting. You never know what airlines are going to either go bankrupt OR cancel your flight at the last minute. or what hotels can go under. It''s too cheap not to get it for piece of mind.

Sorry, I''m just SO angry and don''t want anyone else to spend a full day crying in the fetal position. It''s not fun.

Hey ladies,

Thanks for all the comments so far.

I am indeed taking about straight wedding insurance which covers vendor no-shows/bankruptcy, sickness or death of family member or wedding party member, damages to wedding attire, change of heart, etc. Also, since the wedding is in Florida aka the state with unpredictable weather/hurricanes, I would really like the extra insurance in case things are canceled or people can''t travel, etc.

Ilovethiswebsite: who are you quoting prices from? I am looking mainly at the fireman''s fund since they are the only ones to cover change of heart, but I know wedsafe is pretty good too

Cara: My fiance has State Farm on the house and his car, so I will look into getting liability insurance through them, since it is so cheap, might as well, right?

Lanie: So sorry to hear about that, in fact I think I remember you posting about it a few months ago

No, we''ll be getting married at the Headlands Center for the Arts out by Rodeo Beach (well, less than a 5 minute drive away). It''s very rustic, which is perfect, because we''re going for a more casual feel.

As far as personal protection wedding insurance, I''ve been thinking about it. Just need to talk to J and see what he thinks. Our venue included a brochure for Wedsafe with our contract, and a couple hundred dollars seems like it might be worth it for peace of mind.

We skipped it. We were not at much risk for cancellation due to illness/death/weather/etc., so we didn't feel the need. We also had backup guarantees from nearly all our vendors, which were all part of companies with other photographers/DJs/etc. to serve as backup (no freelancers).

We were not required to purchase liability insurance for our venue.

I''m debating it. Our reception is in an 1850''s mansion, and there is a clause in the contract saying that there are a lot of priceless things and we wil be held accountable if guests break them. I know most of my guests will be under control, but I get so worried about accidnets and unforseeable incidents. It may just be ''peace of mind'' insurance, but I''m leaning towards it. I''m waiting to see what the reception hall coordinator says to my email asking about it...

We skipped it because we had a small wedding (35 people) and had very little money outlaid for the event in advance. Almost everyone was paid day-of.

That''s how D and I feel as well. We''re not getting it.

We had a very small wedding with only deposits paid up front, the rest of the money on the day. We never discussed insurance for the wedding. I never saw it as important.

We also have to have liability insurance, it was 50 dollars as a rider on our home owners insurance. I am not sure if that is what you are looking for or if you mean for cancellations or incliment weather or something. We are not getting this insurance.

I didn''t have wedding insurance, but we did buy travel insurance on the honeymoon and are glad we did! I normally skip any of that extra stuff, but for some reason went ahead and got it on the honeymoon package. We got married 4 days after 9/11, all the flights were still crazy, and the last thing I wanted to do was fly out of the country anyway. We were able to get a complete refund.

It is a good point with the economy the way it is that wedding insurance might be a good idea these days.

we got married last year (september 08) and we bought the wedding insurance.

i think it gave us the peace of mind to know that if anything went wrong (i.e. i had this irrational fear that something might happen to my dress through no fault of mine at the last minute and i will have nothing to wear to my wedding!

, we''re covered by the insurance.

we didn''t buy the travel insurance though because we didn''t think that we''d recover much in the event something went wrong--the only likely scenario at the time was our flight getting cancelled and us having to buy new tickets at a higher cost. since the insurance will give you the "purchase" price, not what you''d have to pay to buy a new one, it didn''t seem all that worth it.

Hey - I am quoting from pal insurance (canadian) http://www.palcanada.com/content/view/67/lang,en/
The only reason why I am even considering this type of insurance is because I have a history of illness (recurrent kidney stones and tummy issues) and I am super paranoid that if I get sick we will loose a ton of money

I don''t understand this... if something happens to your dress last minute then you still have no dress, right? Do they just give you money to cover a new one after the fact? Or do you cancel the whole wedding until you can find a new one? I''m confused.

I think we will end up getting it. Our reception is in an art gallery, and I don''t need some drunken guest putting an elbow through a painting and costing me an extra $10k! Also, with this economy I''m a little worried about a vendor going out of business and leaving me stranded.

oobiecoo, once again ... mine was a irrational fear.

but i think the insurance only pays for your dress (the amount you initially spent) if something happens to it (i.e. the bridal store closed down and you couldn''t get your deposit back or something). however, i don''t think it covers for you to postpone the wedding.

I thought about it very briefly but we didn''t get any.

We did not buy insurance for our wedding. I had never heard of it, but even if I had, we probably wouldn''t have bought it.

If I''m not mistaken, the insurance would provide you with a check for what the dress was worth, but since a dress wouldn''t inhibit you from getting married, the wedding would still go on as planned. It sucks, but at least with insurance, you aren''t out of the money. You would have to go buy a dress last minute. With ours, things like the officiant and the church qualify as "necessary for the act of matrimony", but not things like your cake, your string quartet, etc.

We honeymooned in Cabo in August, and we had no problems... (Although there was a hurricane there the year before, around the same time) I''ve never heard of wedding insurance!?!

I'm probably going to get the wedding insurance. The FH is going to call our insurance company to see if they offer it as well so we can just get it through them instead of a wedding insurance vendor. I'm actually freaking out right now because as i was browsing for houses on mls I see the restaurant where we've already put the deposits down for the wedding in July. The restaurant is for sale. Fortunately we're having two weddings (one in Hawaii and a reception here) so if this one tanks it's going to stink, but as long as I get my money back I'll be happy as a clam.
