Hi All,

I know that I want an emerald cut diamond and I have a few styles that I really like. BUT I will not be part of the buying process. My BF will not be as obsessed as I am so how do I arm him with the knowledge he needs to get a great stone? I''m sure that other women have been in this boat. He understands the color scale and the clarity scale but what would be the best info to let him know about tying it all together?

I guess I''m most worried about the non-obvious, ie. table, depth, etc. and how it all wraps up into a beautiful stone.

Anyone have any hints for me?

ps. I tend to like the squarish emeralds and I want a think band.

tks

Cindy

You sounded like me except that I'm included in the buying/shopping process b/c my bf knows how particular I can be and he wants me to be happy with what I end up with. I think you should suggest going with your BF to "just look around" and both of you look at what YOU like and this way it gives him a real time test to know what you are looking for. I must say, just by giving him the numbers isn't enough to pick out a stone. Because every stone looks diff even when their numbers are close. I was told by the experts on this Forum that you can't just go by table/depth/crown/pavillion/4Cs, you must look at the physical diamonds to decide what is eye pleasing to you.

Once he has gone shopping with you and has a better idea as for what YOU like, then he can go back to the stores and pick one for you. Even though I'm involved in picking out my stone... it is still hard for me to pick THE ultimate favorite. I am being super careful.

Ths Firerock,

We have gone out to see stones and settings. I know he can handle the setting but am not sure how he will do when he gets one on one with the seller. It's so easy for me to try to do all the talking but I just wish I knew what the best advice was to arm him with. Or maybe I'm being just to paranoid ..... diamonds certainly do that to a person don't they !

Hi,
I purchased an emerald cut earlier this year. I found it very helpful to use the chart listed at a website that gives parameters for cut quality.
Here's the connection: http://www.gemappraisers.com/chrt3.htm.

It it very important to find a seller who is willing to give you information regarding things beyond color and clarity. Crown height is very important when it comes to emerald cuts, also.

Have you done a Search on this site and typed in the words Emerald Cut and EC? You will find many threads and it will help you start to solidify information to arm your boyfriend with.

Is he intending to purchase the stone unset?? You will see plenty of advise from so many on this site suggested that that is the best choice.

Have fun.

Hi,
I know exactly how you feel , recently I posted a message (look up the list) and I got some great advice, via e- mail , I hope it can help you ( or maybe some of our expert here will lend a hand..)
tell your bf to look at the GIA OR any other certificate they show him for stone that fit your budget and size and then compare it to an ideal cut for emerald:
Depth should be between 60%-69%
table should be between 59%-68%
crown angles between 32 degrees and 36 degrees
polish and symmetry should be good-excellent

I would ask old miner or leonid for their opinion as well as they seem to be in the trade
good luck!

How about hooking him up with Jonathon at goodoldgold.com or Robin and Todd at niceice.com?
With the general idea of what you want and their expert and very trustworthy help you can be assured he will get a totaly awesome ring at a great price.
Instead of him having to learn everything he and you could trust them to find you the best of the best for the money.
