I currently have a 2 carat Princess cut that I want to change to an Ascher cut. What is the best way to do this without losing much money. Also I am looking at buying a 2 carat Ascher at least G color no less than VS2. About how much should I expect to pay for this.

The ring I have now is an EGL certificate but I have been told that since it isnt an EGL USA certificate it isnt authentic. I have been told it is another EGL cert. Has anyone heard of that and does it really matter? Should I insist on a GIA cert when purchasing the new diamond?

Any help would be appreciated. I dont know how to go about doing this but I need to get the most money for the diamond I have.

From what I''ve learned, EGL has a bad name in the industry. They tend to overgrade, especially on the color. EGL-USA is pretty accurate, but EGL from anywhere else (antwerp or europe or israel) tend to be inaccurately rated.

I have been told to stick with GIA or if you get the EGL, keep in mind you are probably getting a lower graded rock than you thought you ordered.

i thought i had responded to this but maybe it was all in my head...!!

anyway, i would think that your best best might be to find a local retailer who might do a trade for you...if they can get you an asscher and would be willing to take your princess then it could be a deal. it is hard to resell or trade up a diamond unless it''s investment quality, but you should just start shopping around and seeing who might be interested in assisting you.

in terms of online vendors, i think that wink jones, bill pearlman, and james allen do trades or consignment or similar, so you might want to check into them. but you may feel more comfortable going local and seeing who would be willing to work with you to take your princess and get an asscher.

in terms of the cert, i''d see what local places have to say about you having an EGL cert and if they recommend getting it certed by GIA first or if they don''t care...then i wouldn''t bother! good luck!

I am pretty sure that Pearlman''s and Winfield''s will only do consignment, and there have been changes at James Allen so I am not sure anymore, but I think it used to be GIA or AGS stones that they''d consider for a trade. You''d have to call and ask the current policy.

You can look at the price search tool on this site to see what GIA ceritifed asschers sell for with your specifications. How much money you lose on the first stone probably depends on how much you paid in the first place and other factors such as the quality of the stone, etc.
