Okay so... I'm in love with this couch from Room and Board... http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=20077&catalog=filter&menuCatalog=room&menuSubcategory=201198 (I'd customize the fabric to get Gray Velvet Microfiber).

But I really want a couch with a Chaise. So I'm thinking about getting one of these instead:

http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=3154&catalog=filter&menuCatalog=room&menuSubcategory=201198

Or

http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=6602&catalog=filter&menuCatalog=room&menuSubcategory=201198

Or

http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=20279&catalog=filter&menuCatalog=room&menuSubcategory=201198

All the same fabric.

My budget is maxed out at 2,500 but I want something with great quality that lasts.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions other than those I've posted (I'm planning on going to Room and Board next week to try out all of these).

Oooh... Basset is having 25% off. They are 5 blocks away and the section I like with the custom grey microsuede fabric it's still the same price (1,900).

Not bad. Anyone know anything about Basset's quality?

They're all great looking. We got a chaise sectional in a brown microfiber(microsuede great when you have kids). Not sure about the quality (only had it for a year..but so far so good). Got it at Raymour n Flanigan http://www.raymourflanigan.com/catalog/details.asp?ID=100127

When our kids are older, I'm sure it will be safe to get a better quality sofa :naughty:

Do you realize that you are in Rocky Talky? I wondered if there was some new "couch" diamond related to a cushion, or something. ;))

Bassett is decent, not low end and not high end. I am very fortunate to live near the furniture capital of the US, so I have access to so much furniture at great prices through outlets. etc.

Have you tried checking out items from Z gallerie, I think that they have some great unique pieces for a good price. I got my old couch from there and it after 4 year it still looked and felt great. I was able to sell it for a pretty good price and my fiance and I just got some new pieces from there. I just looked on their site and they are still having a pretty good sale.

check it out: http://www.zgallerie.com/c-57-sofas.aspx

my mom swears by Ethan Allen and all of their items are so well made: http://www.ethanallen.com/category?categoryId=8018&pageNumber=0&context=contextualNavFromCategory&nestedCategory=%27cat_8001%27+%3D+%27category%3Dsofas%2C+chairs%2C+and+more%27+%27cat_8001%27+%278018%27%3Battribute_value_nested+%27category_root%27+%3D+%27category%3Dliving+room%27+%27category_root%27+%278001%27

I reported it and asked for it to be moved.

Yeah, I don't have that luxury.

I'm wondering if Room and Board is better quality. The price difference is remarkable between the two.

I like Ethan Allen but last time I priced out what I wanted it was 6K.

I can't tell which manufacturer makes Room and Board's sofas. It says "made in NC", so if I knew who was making it, I might have an idea about quality. I think their prices look high on some items, though.

I know.

I'll go see Basset tomorrow and see what I think. If I don't care for it, I can always go to Room and Board next week.

Hmmm do you live in near southern CA? My friend used to work at Living Spaces and told me that people would drive from a few hours away to buy items from their store: http://www.livingspaces.com/LivingRooms.aspx?mi=2

my mom said an alternative to Ethan Allen is Thomasville: http://www.thomasville.com/ she said their material is *so very* sturdy and they are able to customize.

Nope. Northern California!

I edited my comment above after asking my mom (who is obsessed with interior design) and she mentioned Thomasville, see above. She also said they have some great rebate programs all the time along with some really good in store sales which vary store to store. She said their items are as good as Ethan Allen, very very well made, minus the expensive price.

I agree that Thomasville is very high quality, certainly equal to Ethan Allen, in my opinion. But I still consider them quite expensive.

What about Zgallerie? They have tons of great custom fabric options, kiln-dried hardwood frames, 10-15% off right now, and after 4 years, my ZGallerie Chloe is holding up MUCH better than my C&B sofa.

I agree and mentioned them too. I had a gorgeous crushed velvet sofa that I bought from them and it held up SO WELL, I sold it for about $400 less than I bought it... after 4 years of using it. that's how good it still looked. I really love their pieces, very unique and just plush.

Do you know which model it was? I was in a ZGallerie here in Dallas and mentioned to the SA that I had the Chloe sofa and the Ricki chaise and he suggested my house should be in the ZGallerie archives. This was BEFORE I mentioned that I have a Structure bed, which, btw, is the most solid bed, ever. Over 4 years and the thing is as solid as a rock.

Hmmm I don't remember the model because my mom got it for my college apartment, but it looked a little like this: http://www.zgallerie.com/p-1171-linden-sofa-beluga.aspx but it was in deep eggplant purple and although crushed velvet sounds weird it was cut very short and just felt incredibly soft. It was a really deep too so people LOVED getting comfy on it when they wanted to eeeheeem study  :naughty:

So what carat weight of couch are you considering.

100 pounds would be 226,796 carats.

LOL @ Kenny!

We got a lot of our furniture from Bassett and we are very happy with it. I love that their furniture is customizable (for the most part). We were able to select the firmness of the cushions, the fabric, the color of the feet and the contour of the armrests for our couch. We have only had the furniture for about 9 months, but so far they have been holding up well. We bought their 5 year warranty, which covers a pretty good amount of accidental damage. If we don't ever use it, we get store credit in the value of the warranty. Our dining table arrived with a few scratches in one leaf and they immediately ordered a new table top and replaced it because if they only replaced the leaf, the pattern of the wood's grain would not match. So far, we've been happy with our purchases.

Like others have said...they are no Ethan Allen, but their stuff seems to be of good quality.

We had the worst time finding a chaise sofa that acutally fit our space because we wanted to float the sofa in the room instead of against the wall. We wound up special ordering two pieces that get put together...for us a left arm facing loveseat and a right arm facing chaise. It took about 12 weeks though, but we are very happy. Paid just under $2k with tax and delivery after signing up for Macy's cards. Deep seating with down wrapped seating cushions. Backs are down/feather. There are other fabric and color options too. This set is heavy. It's big enough for two adults to lie down on too. One of us takes the chaise while the other takes the love seat part. There are a bunch of other configurations available.

We had looked at the PB Buchanan, but that one is much smaller and definately not for two adults putting their feet up.

Hi, Gypsy! :wavey:

My husband's family is in the furniture business; they've owned family furniture stores for over 20 years, and they've been doing custom work for even longer than that. SO, I asked him about these companies for you.

He said GENERALLY, with furniture, pieces that are in the same price range (from competing stores/designers) will be of about the same quality.

He said Room and Board has middle to low end quality pieces. He said Bassett is better known for their wood cabinetry in the furniture industry, but their work is generally the same quality as Room and Board, maybe a tad bit nicer.

Of course, he said Ethan Allen has higher quality pieces, but the prices definitely reflect that.

I guess what he's saying is: You get what you pay for. Helpful, huh?

All that being said, even though DH's family is in the furniture business (and thus we pay cost) we ended up getting sofas that would retail for under $2,000 each. They were the style and upholstery that we liked best, and nearly three years later we still love them.

DH's biggest tip once you find the style you like, pay very close attention to the upholstery. The stronger and tighter the knit, the better.

Great advice. I would second the you get what you pay for, and add to that...

Get boxed, piped cushions, and for durability and neatness, get attached back cushions. (Unless you like to adjust pillows constantly.) Get the best quality cushion material you can afford. I have wrapped batting laminated around a latex foam core. I have had my sofa since 1993. It is a classic style, built like a tank, and so I've had it recovered, and the cushions are STILL good after nearly 2 decades.

Ex-hubs sister worked at a high-end furniture store. We took her advice. Or rather I did. HE wanted to go cheap. She told him I was right to go higher. Nearly 20 years later, I can say I'm glad I insisted. Oh, and the brand I have is Massoud. Not such a great website IMO: the furniture is MUCH better looking in person, but if you can find a dealer, that brand is worth a look. They have a gazillion fabrics....

ETA - I had the manufacturer spelled wrong. As Moussad. No, Israeli Intelligence (badly spelled) is NOT branching out into sofas!

My ILs have a ton of furniture from Bassets (sofa, tables, dining room set, bedroom set, etc) and they are nice and comfortable. I will be curious what you think.
