I noticed that I can see a tiny spot on my VS2 diamond when I look at it from the side. I can only see it when I take off my ring and hold it up close (like inches from my face). The cert chart has some clouds and feathers plotted but nothing else. I believe I'm seeing a carbon spot. I tried rubbing it to see if it was just dirt and it didn't come off. I used a 10X lupe to look at it and can see it and some other small dark spots pretty clearly when looking at the diamond from the sides.
I can't see anything however looking from the top down at my diamond. It is super sparkly even indoors with low natural light and I can't see anything even with a 10X lupe.
I thought VS2 diamonds were supposed to be eye clean? Does "eye clean" only refer to looking from top down? Or since I can see a spot from the side, the diamond is not eye clean? I'm in my mid twenties and the diamond size is 1.15 if it makes a difference. Thanks!

There is a crystal in your diamond and it is the grade setting inclusion, the inclusions are listed in order of importance under the inclusion map.

Oh! Could that be what I'm seeing? I thought crystals were light. I'm seeing a tiny brownish/black spot. Is it normal to be able to see this from the side with the naked eye?

"Eye clean" is typically judged (in the trade) from the face-up view. (looking from top down)

Eye clean is a subjective term, though, so what a vendor may deem eye clean may not jive with what you see. hth

Crystals can be dark-depends on what type of crystal inclusion it is.

Depends on your vision. Some may be able to see inclusions more easily than others. I have "loupe vision" (totally nearsighted) I can see inclusions all too well. =)

Thanks! I'm slightly nearsighted for sure.

That's because all diamonds, in the trade, are graded in clarity from the top down. So there is a chance you might see something from the side. However, as a VS2, you shouldn't from the top.
