Hi everyone,

My local jewelry store is going out of business (it's legit) and they are selling a VS2 F 1.22 carat round cut diamond for $8000 in platinum setting. Should I go for it? I didn't remember to ask for the cut or the other specs, but I can go back to find out more if that turns out to be necessary. I just don't want to keep returning to avoid appearing too eager. If I do go back, what else should I ask?

Also, is Tiffany/Cartier worth the price?

Thanks!

Ask for a copy of the grading lab report for the diamond and then come here and post the info. You have no idea what you are getting without that. A picture of the ring would be nice, too! But don't think of discussing it further without the grading report on the diamond. It could be a good or very bad deal.

Tiffany has nice diamond rings, but they are priced maybe a third higher than getting the exact same thing elsewhere. In fact, you can actually get a better cut diamond from some of the vendors here than some sold at Tiffany, Cartier, HW, etc. We have seen people post diamond certificates from some of those and they were nice but not always superideal cut. I actually have an ideal cut diamond set in a Tiffany replica setting and it has been mistaken for the real thing in the Tiffany store before!

OK, so I got more information. So the depth 59.6%, table 59%, crown 14%, pavilion depth 43%, girdle thickness med (cut excellent), polish symmetry excellent. Fluorescence none. Again, it's 1.22 carat, VS2, F for $8000. Is it worthwhile? It also has the hearts and arrows rating. Thanks!

Is the grading for GIA, AGS, EGL, IGI?? Sounds like it might be EGL as I believe the others don't put hearts and arrows in the report. If EGL, was it EGL USA or another country.

It's an EGL cert, EGL international I believe. If this gives me something to bargain with, what price range should I try to get it down to? Any advice is well appreciated, thanks!

Well, that's the issue then. EGL International grading vary wildly. I believe some people have seen grading been more than 4 colors worse and 2-3 clarity grades worse. That means this so-called VS2/F could easily be a SI2/J or even worse! Just do a search on this forum for EGL and you will see there are some horror stories.

The issue is there is going out of business sale, so you don't have recourse to get the ring independently appraised and if the specs don't match up, return it.

I would take a pass on it.
