Is it possible to see an inclusin from the side w/the naked ( examining) eye? I have an asscher cut diamond and I can see a small black spot from side view...nothing from top. I am not sure if it is an inclusion or a reflection? On my GIA report, under clarity grade (which is VS2...I originally thought it was VS1...opps) it has characteristics listed and it says "Crystal"...what does this mean? is a crystal a black spot?

YES you can see it!
Grading is only face up...not through the side/pavillion
And in any event, the grading system doesn't give any info about "eye clean"...

That bs that's on most web sites about "Vs2...can't be seen with the naked eye"...blah blah blah

And yes, the crystal can be black...that's what you're seeing

But don't sweat it unless it reall drives you crazy..no one will notice

Yes it is possible to see an inclusion from the side with the naked eye in a VS2 grade.

I am just a consumer but this question has been asked before. Although the inclusions are taken into consideration it is the face up view which establishes the grade.

A crystal is just that it could be another diamond or other mineral, I believe peridot and garnet are sometimes in the same mantle as diamonds when then grow. Although you usually see black crystals referred to as carbon or coal, I have read that they are sometimes garnet but they look dark in the diamond.

There are many posts here about these subjects and also in the tutorial and under the menu listing where you found rockytalky there are other subjects where pricescope members are presently composing a book.

Do crystals "grow" or appear more over time??? I have heard people on these forums say they just "got" an inclusion in the diamond that was not there before? In a way I like the crystal...it''s like a "beauty mark"...my fiance''s grandmother has a beautiful oec diamond e-ring that she wears alll the time and has since like 60 years ago, and it has a noticeable black spot that you can see from all angles from like a foot away- I don''t know what but I always liked it, diamonds are from nature and like humans...they are not :"perfect"!

I do not believe inclusions/crystals grow.

Sometimes people notice their inclusions after spending more time with their stone and studying it. Also, when dirty, inclusions can be slightly more noticable when viewed from the top of the stone.

FWIW, I have a VS2 GIA graded diamond and I can see the inclusion from the side.
