Vintage 925 ball set

Can anyone explain to me why some vintage pieces are strung with what looks like dental floss to me? It is very strong and has a waxy feel to it.
I've searched at length but cannot find any info on this technique or how to define it in an auction description

It is a waxed cord, possibly nylon. Many Old Pawn Native American pieces are strung on this material.
Here is a photo of a necklace that I have, showing the same cord.
