Wondering if any of you have a guess as to what type of stone might be in this ring - it''s an antique gold ring, with British hallmarks and has 3 moss green colored stones that definitely have some scratching. Thanks!

Is it clear/opaque etc etc?

If it''s clear then it could well be a synthetic stone. If it''s opaque it could be an Agate. Would love to see some pics and then it might be easier to answer.

It could be anything with your vague desciption. A close up picture would be extremely helpful. Could you also describe the hallmark?

It has a London hallmark (looks like a cat head) and what looks to be a fairly old date letter "q" and also C & TJ.

A cat's head in a shield (with no crown on the cat) denotes a London hallmark from 1821 onwards.

A small lower case q represents a date and could be one of the following (and it depends on the type of script):

1871
1911
1931 - this is my bet for the style of the ring.
1971

Have a look at this website and see if you can match the typeface

http://www.horologia.co.uk/hallmarks2.html

The way the edge of the table has abraded suggests it's a synthetic stone but it's very difficult to tell. If you take it in to a local jeweller they should be able to test to see if it's a real or synthetic gemstone.

I''m going to hazard a guess that it''s a garnet topped doublet.
