Hi All,

I have been proposed with a situation to purchase an engagement ring due to some financial hardships faced by an aquaintence of mine. The actual price I do not want to disclose, however he showed me what he paid for the ring and the appraisal value. I was hoping the great community of experts here would provide some help, considering I''m new to diamonds.

The diamond details are below:

Round Brilliant
Measurements: 7.89 - 7.91 x 4.88 mm
Carat Weight: 1.86
Color Grade: G
Clarity Grade: SI1
Cut Grade: Excellent

Polish & Symmetry are both Excellent
No Flourescence
Supposedly Eye-Clean

Table: 56%
Depth: 61.8%
Crown: 35%
Pavilion: 40.6%
Cutlet: none

These are the details I wrote down from the GIA report. I have also plugged in the numbers into the HCA and it resulted as 0.9. The diamond looked VERY brilliant and just sparkled immensely.

Thanks,
Dave

Numbers so far look great

Well the proportion numbers are very good.

I don't know what this acquaintance is wanting, but you should know that generally when reselling a diamond, the price will be 30-50% of retail. Depending on where he purchased and whether the appraisal is real or inflated (most are very seriously inflated), will determine what is a fair price. Use the diamond search bar at the top of the page to see what online vendors would charge for a similar stone--then cut that price in at least half. I would also recommend having an independent appraiser look at the diamond at and least verify that it matches the GIA report and that nothing has happened to the stone since the report was issued (like a chip or other damage).

If you want to be 100% sure of this purchase, buy yourself an Idealscope. This way you can check for any light leakage! But with these numbers, it has the potential to be a gorgeous stone!

Very good points. I will definitely take the diamond to get inspected to verify the stone is the same as the report and that no damage has been incurred.

I didn''t know diamond resale was at such a loss. Perhaps I should ask for a lower price if everything about the diamond checks out. Thanks a lot for the advice!

Cheers,
Dave
