Hi PS-ers,

I thought once MY e-ring was done I would have little to post, but I am definitely back and in major need of the help and expertise of the people here. My e-ring came out SO great, I totally trust the help of you guys.

My best friend's boyfriend (who lives out of state) decided to tell me not too long ago that he would like to propose THIS Friday and that he would like for me to select the e-ring. I'm not quite sure that he know that this isn't exactly a 1-2 day process but I am determined to pull this off before he is on the plane back home.

If anyone has a lead on a stone+setting within these parameters please, please send them over my way! I am looking to buy within 48 hours and willing to pay for overnight shipping. Ideally due to time I would want the stone+setting done together from the same place and shipped.

Here are his parameters:

Budget (setting+diamond): $5,000

Shape: Round
Color: D or E (boo)
Clarity: nothing lower than SI2, with no visible inclusions
Cut: Excellent or Very Good
Carat: 0.75 or higher (personally because she is my friend I would like to go as high as possible)

Setting: simple 14k white gold band with no embellishments, 4-prong, slim band (would like to go very, very cheap on the band and get a better diamond since she will most likely upgrade it to her own liking afterwards)

ANY HELP WOULD SO MUCH BE APPRECIATED! I FEEL A LITTLE DESPERATE SINCE I WILL BE WORKING THIS WHOLE WEEK AND TIME IS NOT ON MY SIDE!

It is so nice of you to help your friend out on this -- especially considering the time constraints! :))

I think your friend's color parameter is unrealistic for his budget. That said, an G stone of that size will look every bit as white to eyes (of most people -- not everyone is a PS'er! ;)) ) as any lower color... H will be white, for that matter.

I will look a bit...

VRBeauty: Yes I am in S.Cal! Thank you for the link and also thank you Karl_K for noticing the "flaws". Very grateful for your suggestions in any case!

msop4: YES! I completely agree. My own diamond is H/SI2 and I think I got such a great value. I am so sad that by wanting an E, a bulk of the budget will go to that restriction but I do want to respect his parameters as much as possible. Personally, I know for a fact that my friend would go down in color for a diamond that will face up much larger...thank you for searching!

Another parameter I forgot to mention: GIA Grading only

Karl_K: "maybe doable" :( hahaha love the phrasing. Would be more than willing to place phone calls, but I don't work in an environment where I can make personal calls. *sigh*

AL12, I remember you have an H/SI1

I looked on James Allen but everything says it wont ship until Thursday

AL12, does your friend even know what he's talking about when it comes to diamonds, or has he been to the "maul" looking at stones?? Also, does he care about what his FF wants? I think you need to have a "come to Jesus" with him and just lay it all out. If I were the girl, I'd be really upset if I got a smaller higher color stone when I could've gotten something larger that looked just as white. I don't even know what to say about the "GIA only" -- yes, I do... it's dumb.

I'm not meaning to come across as hateful... seriously. It's just that it's the same old song and dance from uneducated (or worse, "maul educated") men and women who think they "can't have lower than X color or X clarity" ...then say it's okay if they get a "very good" cut. By putting less emphasis on cut, it is clear they haven't researched nearly enough.

This is where you can help him -- isn't he lucky?! 8-) ;))

JulieN: :D SO FUNNY...you remember better than i do! stress from this situation is affecting my memory. thanks for looking at James Allen!!!

Mayk and Lioness: LOVE...especially the 0.81 Brian Gavin solitaire....love, love, love that personally. but i think the two strictest parameters are 1)budget 2) i know personally that the fiance does not want any diamonds on the setting (just plain band) so both of those are out. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the suggestions. must keep hunting. so close, but just not quite

ALSO RING SIZE 5! trying to edit my first post with the parameters but can't quite figure out how to do it if at all.

msop04:
-i think you're right. i'm going to shoot him an email addressing all those things (about what Fiancee would want vs. what he wants) and see if i can talk him into a lower color range. i have no idea how much he has researched so i don't know how strongly he feels about his parameters. i also do want to respect what he's asking for and not have him feel as if i'm trying to control how he uses his money if that makes sense.

-GIA grading: actually i am a believer in GIA grading even though i'm fairly new to the diamond game so i support him on this parameter! no offense taken if no offense given by this!

-parameters of excellent/very good cut came from me. i will not compromise that for my friend! :D

The ring at Jewels by Grace doesn't have a GIA certificate - it has an AGS certificate - which most here would consider to be just as good, or better. It's a .91 E VS1 CT stone set in PLATINUM with a matching BAND with an AGS certificate for LESS than $5700!!

This is an AMAZING deal. Tell him to hit it before somebody else sees this thread and buys it out from under him.

(Yes, I really am sitting here yelling at the computer!)

AL12, you do not have to be vary of AGSL cert - they are the only lab always on par with GIA and, actually, even stricter than GIA when it comes to cut. Grab the deal as long you can and run :D it will be hardly possible to get much better than that.

It is an E, close to a carat, AGS 000 and a wedding set in size 5 - basically "your wish is my command"

AGS trades at a premium-- MORE than GIA. That's because it is just as highly regarded as GIA and then goes beyond with the light performance evaluation.

"IGI and EGL are like large statewide universities.

GIA is Ivy League, and AGS is like the MIT rocket-science program.

A polisher or manufacturer sends each diamond (student) to the place it will get the best grade (earn more $).

The good to average go to the large universities (IGI/EGL).

The better ones are sent to the Ivy League (GIA / HRD) and a few nerds go to MIT (AGS).
Drop outs end up in a ‘program’ at a chain store or Joe's Bar & Grading Lab."

Okay?

Does the BF really have to propose this friday. To get a ring in such a short time period is terrible limiting. It sounds like he just wants to walk into a mall store and pick one up

Could you perhaps get him to give you more time and educate him that picking a diamond is an investment. He could do much better if you had a few more weeks.

You are a GOOD friend for trying to help!

Another for the JBG setting. Best of luck, he would be a fool to pass that up

That is a perfect set, hope he snaps it up.

Yes, and if he's buying is such haste, then he needs to buy from a place w/ a great return policy because he might just need it! His 48 hours is a very ridiculous turnaround time to get a high quality ring done and also delivered to him from an online vendor.

Grace has a return policy! That ring is awesome. If I were shopping for a pendant I'd buy it! AGS 000. In my book it doesn't get better! Go price comparison shop that diamond. He can't touch one for tat color and clarity in that range!

:D

I think you may have misunderstood what I posted about cut. I would not consider any less than excellent cut, so VG would be a no-go for me. After all, it's the most important C! :)) As far as GIA only, I thought you meant he wouldn't consider AGS, as those are the most consistent/reputable labs. I get that you want to support him as a friend, which is totally understandable. Your friend will most likely know you "helped pick out" her ring and knew what she liked... so expressing her wants to him is all you can do. If he doesn't take her preferences into consideration, that's not on you. :|

Also, is it absolutely necessary that he propose with a ring? ....it's just really short notice unless he just goes to a mall chain and picks one out. He could propose then shop for a ring, or they could shop for a ring together. :))

I really hope that JbG ring works out!!! It looks perfect, just in the stats you need and if you factor in the w-band I'd say it's within budget. Good luck to your friend (and to you for trying to educate him that AGS is as acceptable as GIA grading!)

thank you for the overwhelming response (in a great way!) and for the support for JBG as well as for AGS grading.

also yes, they have a very complicated situation and even from my view point i believe it is important that this next step (of getting engaged) happens before he leaves again.

i will re-confirm the return policy and at time possibly just go for it as i really think time is of the essence!

i would love to reply to everyone individually, which is what i like to do, but am literally going to run to work while trying to get JBG on the phone.

just a quick response to msop04:
-no, no i didn't think you were asking me to go below for cut!! that was just a tidbit that i threw in there since it was a parameter that BF didn't include and i myself was stringent on :)
-if this ring doesn't work out, maybe proposing ring-less or with just a simple band as you suggested is an option~ didn't think about that!

...a saying comes to mind - buy in haste, repent at leisure.
BUT that set Gypsy posted is ideal! : )

Now I keep staring at the JBEG AGS 000 deal. I really need to take a break from these boards. Lol

So what did he decide? Has it been 48 hours?
