I have put off this decision as long as I can. Please help! I've installed "beadboard look" wallpaper around the lower 2/3rd's of three bathroom walls. Painted the first coat with Benjamin Moore "Super White" eggshell finish on the advice of the wallpaper dude -- BUT -- I'm having 2nd thoughts & wonder if I should use the quart of Semi-gloss I bought for the doors & trim for my 2nd coat NOW & just buy more semi-gloss for the doors & trim later.

For reference - all the trim in the house is semi-gloss white. The top third of the room will probably be a light lavender called "Beach Plum". The new sink is white undermount w/a polished glossy carrera marble top. All original 40's-ish antique chrome fixtures. New chrome antique style faucet. Bathtub/ Sink cabinet & toilet are white but more of an antique white so contrasts a bit.

SO: .... for the 2nd (final) coat:

SEMI-GLOSS (will highlight flaws more, but might make it look more like wood than wallpaper)

or

EGGSHELL (ignore the wallpaper guy's advice at my own peril)

I have to paint it today because the sink install could be tomorrow! I'm flip-flopping & sucking up all the available hours of the day. HELP!!!!!!!

eggshell

Once the wall is divided into semi vs eggshell, it will be a real b*tch to paint over when you redo the room! That, and the semi shine will highlight the seams and the imperfections on the wall. The eggshell will help them blend in.

I vote for SEMI-Gloss. It will achieve the look you want ... Pics would have been helpful... Don't slap me. LOL!!!!

semi-gloss.

THANK YOU Enerchi, Kaleigh & Movie Zombie!

I ran up to take a picture but my cellphone isn't cooperating w/emailing it to myself. :? Hopefully will be able to post soon. The eggshell does look a *little* shiny but I keep thinking it would look better w/semigloss! But I SKEERD!

There is one wrinkly piece that will look bad semi-gloss but it will be behind the new sink cabinet anyhoo. (Where the wall-hung sink was removed & the wall was patched. Imperfect!)

Anyone else!!???

Does this help? Bonus points if you spot the thirsty kittah.

Kitty in the bath, too cute. I still say Semi gloss..

I got the bonus points - i found the kitty in the tub!!! :appl:

Lovely reno - I'm sure you'll be fine either way. Is it because you have more of one paint than another and its "here" and convenient? It won't look terrible if you go one over the other. Don't stress that you'll be ruining something - it will be FINE no matter what you chose.

:appl: to you WINNERS!

I only have a quart of the semi-gloss right now but I think it'll cover the areas I need to finish by tomorrow. And I can use the left-over, un-used 3/4 of a gallon of eggshell to freshen the neighboring hallway - so it isn't about the waste I guess. I'm just really questioning my gut since the wallpaper guy was so firm in his ideas. I bought materials for *his idea* and did my first coat that way. But now that I have to commit, commit before the cabinet install -- I want to try out MY IDEA!

(I just realized that I *could* try out the semi-gloss on the area that will be hidden by the cabinet & see if it looks good --- but that's the worst area because it's the wrinkliest) Hmmmmmm.

Isn't it best to use semi-gloss for areas exposed to steam anyway?

ETA- it took me about 10 tries to come up with the word "exposed." Ahhh, preggo brain!

1. I love thirsty kitty.
2. I vote semi-gloss.
3. I can't believe that's wallpaper. I am intrigued.
4. Deco--Have you heard that Tallulah is becoming a very popular name for CHILDREN lately? We are such trendsetters!

I always heard to paint in semi gloss for bathrooms and kitchens for easy clean up!

hehee, this pic is so cute of your kitty! :appl:

Semi-gloss!

THANKS EVERYONE!

:wavey:

I listened to the PS-mafia (& my own original instinct) and just finished up a thick, nervy coat of SEMI-GLOSS. Feeling lucky that I had more than enough for the "beadboard" area & associated trim, but will still probably need another quart for the rest of the room's trim & doors. SO FAR, SO GOOD!

Will update when I see how it all comes together. Fingers crossed in the meantime.

        for pushing me off the fence & into action. In the nick of time too -- as it's getting dark here!

OH! I came to this thread late!

Your cat is so cute. I had to show my husband. Such a beauty.

I would have said semi-gloss too.

Deco, how is the purple exterior working out? Has the sun taken a toll at all? Hope it is still looking as smoking as it was when it was first painted!! :wavey:

and definitely, semi-gloss!

Late but I am Team Semi-Gloss! Glad you went with your gut-I always trust my gut and ignore salespeople's opinions. They tend to have strong opinions (I did when I was in retail and helping customers!) and it can sway you sometimes.

BTW your bathroom is great-I love the tub, and the kitteh in it of course!

Another PS-vote-sitch! I am SO happy we went w/the purple & it's looking pretty darn fresh for a couple, three? years old now. I just touched up the ancient screen door because we had a center panel repaired. In it's environment, with all the greenery & irises blooming right now, and bluestone walkways with deep purple undertones -- it's PERFECT in its own crazy way. Believe it or not, this bathroom will be the only purple accent in the INSIDE of our house. Time to tie it in, HA!

ETA: Here's the interior purple I'm thinking of using for the top part of the walls/vaulted ceiling of the bathroom. There are too many angles in there to do a white ceiling too!

I was skeptical about the bead board wallpaper until I saw it. Love it! Love the purple you're thinking about using on the ceiling too. And, best kitteh pic evah.

I love beadboard but had never heard of the 3D wallpaper beadboard! I would have also voted for the semi-gloss since that was what you were using for the wood anyway. I have eggshell on some of my walls and love it, but I wouldn't want it on woodwork (and your beadboard wallpaper is supposed to simulate wood!).

Deco, I am glad to hear you are still loving it, and it is still fresh looking. It must be getting close to 3 years ago....and it was a very fun poll.

That is a nice accent colour to help bring the purple love inside! :appl:

**** UPDATE ******

Thought some of y'all might be interested that in the cool light of day - the SEMI-GLOSS looks FANTASTIC! I'd post another picture but it's such a subtle change that it won't really tell the tale. But in PERSON - it just looks so very much more *right*.

(The best way I can describe it is that now when I walk in the room the profile of the wall I pass on my right just GLEAMS. The eggshell shimmered. Now it's like POW. BEADBOARD! Clean, white, glossy bathroom pizazz. On the walls you're facing directly - the change is more subdued. But on the angle ... YESSSSSSS!)

Whew! I really appreciate everyone's comments & votes. So glad to have PS & PS peeps as a resource. HUGS.

You won! Hi Okie girl! I just went back to the old thread/memory lane myself & realized - where the heck is Starset Princess? It was the photo SHE posted that helped us turn the corner on that decision & end up w/a scheme we adore!

Wherever you are -- THANK YOU STARSET!

Oh, yes, I swooned over that picture she posted! I am a purple lover from way back (I'm the one who keeps pining for lilac fiestaware), so I took great joy in the entire thread. Your house is just adorable, so charming and quaint. And especially since it's purple!
