Dear everybody,

I urgently need some advice. Me and my boyfriend are looking for a nice diamond stone for our engagement ring. As I am living in Belgium, we decided to find one in Antwerp. Neither of us is Belgian and had no idea about the district but people have been very helpful and we are having great time looking around. We have finally narrowed down to the two stones: one is Asscher-cut and the other is Emerald-cut.

The decision time has come - I need to decide within a day and it is so difficult! Could anybody give me some advice/comment?

(1)1.08ct Asscher-cut H/VVS2 GIA certified, depth 6.4, Excellent symmetry, 4930 dollars before tax

(2)1.09ct Emerald-cut E/VVS2 HRD certified, depth 6.7, 5560 dollars before tax

The other parameters are more or less similar.

The first one has more life and in fact looks bigger. The second is elegantly rectangular and looks so white.

Thanks in advance and in panic

Close your eyes and quickly get a mental picture of the ring you want.
Which shape diamond was in it?

Hi Katie,

I find the Asschers to be a very neat stone and I love emerald cuts too. I think I may lean towards the Asscher as it is very different. I think that may bring more pleasure everytime you look at it on your finger. Just my thoughts...Cindy

2 nd. (my choice)

You have selected two very different beasts. Tough to tell, but the second has alot going for it: top quality and class.

Shape preference is such a personal choice and it sounds like the asscher stone speaks to you more. If this is the case then that's what I would go with.

I would normally not choose any asscher cut, simply because I'm not a huge fan of the shape. Plus, in this case we really have no idea how "asscher-like" it actually is as opposed to merely square emerald-like.

However, under these circumstances, I'd suggest you choose the asscher. Since you don't seem to care if it's an asscher-look or not, the asscher is thousands cheaper, about the same carat weight, and you say looks better. Get the asscher and save your money for a gorgeous setting.

This is my opinion,
Asscher cuts tend to look samller then their size, because of the way they are cut therefore you have to either go for a bigger stone1.25-1.50 in an asscher ,or go for the ec.(that's if you want a big look for the money).

they are both very classy looking diamonds.

Dear, dear repliers,

Thank you so much for your precious opinions. You cannot imagine how much I appreciated them. I read each so many times!

I had a most agonising but most wonderful day - my heart was swinging back and forth between the two stones all day.
Then suddenly I knew what I wanted - I just "felt" the decision! I have chosen the Emerald one, and I am very, very happy about it now.

I find the stone "metaphysically beautiful".

Thanks again for such timely help!

Lots of love

Congratulations! Your story (and surely your stone) are great ones. I hope you will find a ring with matching characteristics

After all, diamonds are suposed to be "methaphysically beautiful" - this is how they were praised before cutters could put facets on them... Yours is perfect.

Best of luck!
