Approximately nine months ago I bought an engagement ring for my fiance''. Two weeks ago the diamond fell out while we were out to dinner. To no avail, we were unable to find the diamond. I brought the ring back to the orginal jeweler, who could not provide us with an explanation why the diamond fell out. I brought the setting to another jeweler who examined it and said the prongs were fine. Unfortunately, I did not have insurance on it. The orginal jeweler offered to sell me another diamond at his cost. I did meet with him and his quotes seemed high compared to what I bought the ring for. My questions are 1) What is the usual markup on diamonds? I heard eveything from a small margin to 200%. 2) Second, can anyone give me advice on how to get a replacement diamond without denting my wallet to bad? Thanks

Youch. Looks like you're going to have to chalk this up as a valuable lesson in why people should have insurance on their diamond engagement ring. Even stores that offer a so called "life-time replacement" policy I've never seen come through. Look at this as you are starting back from square one again jsil. Compare that price/value of what you're being offered from your local and if you are open to shopping around both locally and on the Internet then check and investigate all your options before plunking down the cash. Oh and ... get insurance this time.

Insurance is one of those things that we all hate to pay for but we all need to have. Automobile, home owners, apartment, business isurance. Some movie stars have insurance on certain body parts and yes, we need insurance on our jewelry. Some of us take chances and do not buy insurance but that can be an expensive mistake. Would you drive your car without insurance even if it was not the law? I hope not! If you wait until you can afford it, you never will so just bite the bullet and get your jewelry insured. I don't mind selling someone another diamond because they lost the first one but I sure hate to hear stories like this.
