Hi.

I was just curious. I know alot of folks here have upgraded their ring or changed their settings. What happened to the old settings? Did you trade that in? Sell it or was it melted and remade as part of your new setting?

I reset my original stone into a pendant which I am actually resetting again right now! But I cannot recall what I did with the mounting and for some reason I am afraid it is lost, I have not seen it in a while in my jewel box...

I reset the diamond into a right hand ring and the mounting is in my jewelry box. There are some miscellaneous small stones in it that might come in handy some day for something.

My original e-ring stone is being set in a right-hand ring. Setting is in jewlery box. I don''t think jewlers will melt down your old setting to reuse. I think the material may not be pure enough. Some people resell their old settings if there are a lot of side stones, engraving or some valuable features. Mine was a simple solitare out of gold.

My original engagement diamond is in a pendant now. The setting which was a white gold solitaire is probably floating around in a drawer somewhere. I not even quite sure what happened to it!

Aside from putting the diamond in a new setting. Has anyone ever tried doing something with the old setting? Is it even possible or cost effective to melt and remove diamonds from an old setting and turn it into something else? Or maybe change the style a setting and still use the old metal & incorporate diamonds from that setting into the new ring? Has that been done?

I think trading it in or selling it to the jeweler for scrap is the biggest waste. Put a colored gemstone in it. The '70s to '90s yellow gold with baguettes or channel sets are great for gemstones and usually do not look outdated. They end up looking more contemporary with a gemstone. Even the ordinary Tiffany for a small diamond can get a "head swap" for a larger or different shape stone as long as the shank is heavy enough to be worthwhile.

I am soon to take delivery of my gorgeous new stone from GOG and will have it set by Precious Metals. My orginal E stone will be made into a diamond solitare pendant and my wedding and eternity will be made into a hammer set pinky rh ring.
I am so excited
