Hi everybody :wavey:

I want to sell my ring and get a new ring, but I don't know what is the current stats of my ring. I only know it was purchased for maybe $1600 about 10 years back. www.photobucket.com/myring750

About 1 year ago, I asked a B&M store how much I can sell it for and she said $400 because there is no demand to buy diamonds. Then in December 2011, went to look at stone/rings at the B&M store and ask how much can sell the ring for and he said I can use it to put $650 toward a new purchase. So that's all the info I have to go by, I didn't know to ask how big the ring is or what color/clarity they think it is and it has no GIA cerf. Because it's not a high price ring, I don't want to spend money to get it graded or should I still get it graded? How much should I estimate to sell this ring for?

I have a budget TOTAL of $4500 for ring and setting. But if I can sell my current ring, then maybe I have a bit more to splurge.
I really want a setting with channels or pave if possible and I prefer to have platinum, but will sacrafice for 18k whitegold to get a better stone.

Can you lovely people make some reccodmentation for me?

Which options do you all prefer....?

Smaller stone/Ideal or Excellent Cut/ G/VS2 / Platinum setting?

or

Bigger stone/ Very Good Cut/ H/SI2 /18K Whitegold setting?

or

Get the smaller (A CUT ABOVE® , Expert Selection, and Premium Select) and wear it for a few years and then upgrade to Bigger later?

I would get the best diamond I could afford from someone who has an upgrade policy you like. Would you want to keep your original diamond for a pendant?

If I were you, FIRST I would have someone look at your ring and tell you the size and color of your diamond. I would also read up a bit on ideal cut stones here and how to use the HCA tool properly to judge them (if you're looking for a round). If you want the sparkliest, prettiest stone, you want amazing light return, and only ideal cuts will give you that. Most people here stay in the GIA Excellent range, using the HCA tool and ASET images to analyze them, or get AGS 000 stones. I think you will be happier with a slightly smaller, better cut stone than a bigger, less well cut one. The difference in size between the two you posted is less than a third of a millimeter - I personally would not be able to notice that.

And yes, I agree to shop from a vendor with a good trade-up or trade-in policy if you think there is any chance you'll want to upgrade again in the future. I think at BGD, only some of the stones have that policy applied to them, and one from the virtual selection like you linked to would not.

Fortunately, there could be LOT of good choices between the two options you posted! I'd get an ideal or excellent cut stone, but you can certainly go down to H or I color, and VS2-SI1 clarity. Whether to go with platinum or not really depends on the pricing of the particular setting you want. I like the WF stone you posted, though, as long as they say it is eyeclean. Plus it is nice to get a stone that could be upgraded in the future.

That Brian Gavin stone is just in the virtual inventory so you'd have no idea what it looks like. I would stick with in-house stones so you have pictures, idealscopes, etc.

I didn't notice, I'm still new to the dealer sites. Thanks for pointing that out.

The ring I have right now is a round and I didn't think of keeping it as a pendent, you mean I should make it into a necklace? Enticing suggestions, but I would have to hunt down a good place to look for pendent and that's going to take me another month of search. I really want a ring.

Any suggestions on a nice Channel or Pave setting within my budget?

I paid $125 for an appraisal and got several pieces of jewelry appraised for that amount (I basically bought an hour of time). I'd recommend it so you can have some idea of how to represent your diamond for sale purposes, and to protect yourself to make sure you get what's fair.

The sweet spot for budgeting seems to be G-H in color, VS2-SI1 in clarity. I'd stick with ideal cut. But there are lots of options between what you have posted, and if you can firm up your budget, you can get better recommendations.

Thanks never thought of getting more than one item appraised. Maybe I can get some family member's items to get it appraised as well.

How many and what pieces of jewelry did you get appraised? What kind of appraisal should I do, how much does it usually cost for just 1 item appraisals?

I don't know if you're okay with buying pre-worn jewelry, but PS has a "preloved" section where people can list what they're selling. Mostly they list on Diamond Bistro, and there are some rings and diamonds there that may fit what you are looking for.

https://www.pricescope.com/forum/preloved-ps-jewels/henri-daussi-diamond-engagement-ring-price-cut-4500-t170431.html

Here is a diamond in a fancy round cut "Star129" that is in between the ones posted in size:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/8830/
To see the price you click "reserve diamond" and that puts it in your cart but doesn't actually reserve it.

Or were you looking only for round brilliants? Your post did not specify - so I'm sorry if I'm throwing out suggestions that are useless, haha.

For setting ideas, you should look through this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/the-forum-engagement-ring-folder-eye-candy.5429/ and pick out some favorites, then that will give the rest of us something more to go on.

HI Carly,

I would go with an ideal cut for sure. The sparkle will blow you away.

Take a look at this one from Brian Gavin. It's a K but in the size I don't think you would notice the color. I don't know how color sensitive you are?

Anyway I've been stalking this diamond because for the size it's a great price. The BG Blue diamonds have blue fluorescence so they are less expensive. I have BG blue diamond and it's the prettiest thing I've ever seen. Oh also BG have 10% off for January on their IJK diamonds.

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d.../0.812-j-si1-round-diamond-blags-104055417003

You could then afford something like this setting:

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/e...nes/bead-set-cathedral-18k-white-gold-5484w18

Although if you are going to upgrade in a while I wouldn't spend too much on a setting that might not be able to be used.

Good luck!

Edited to add: Appraisals are great to get an idea of value for insurance but don't expect to get anything like the appraised amount when selling.

By the way I just checked out that virtual stone from BG. The diameter of the one I linked above is the same as the virtual one, even though it's a smaller carat size. That says that the virtual one is cut deep. The one I linked is much cheaper too.

I wouldn't be scared off lower color stones, especially in less than a carat size, color is not as evident. I had a .8ct J and I never saw any tint.

I just notice that the stone I posted from WF does not mention that it is Eyeclean. Sigh... I was wondering why it is a bigger size diamond, but nobody bought it. Now I know.

Should I buy the setting with the diamond together online?
Any drawback if I don't buy them together from the same online dealer or if I buy from a B&M store and send it to the online dealer to set it?

At a B&M store that I was looking at stones and setting 18K, he offer to give me 65% off a $1600 setting 18K if I buy together. But another B&M store was more resonable, maybe $800-1000 for the setting without stones.

If it were me... I would get an H-I colored, ideal cut stone, eyeclean SI1. I would want the best cut possible- an the biggest my budget would allow- and a stone with an upgrade policy.

A better cut stone will outshine a very good cut stone- hands down.

After seeing every picture of a stone that has hearts and arrows, now I'm starting to think that all diamonds have hearts and arrows but I know that is not the case. :loopy:

I've been looking at Idea cuts. I guess I just need reassurance since I've never ever seen diamonds before, so pardon me for my questoins. Thanks AmyBling.

I thought your original ring was a diamond.... Was it a colored stone?

I would likely buy second hand :)) Or, counterintuitively, devote a good chubk of budget to a halo design for the most impact on the hand.

I heard that WF will be loading some new inventory on Monday, anyone else heard this. I was chatting with a rep and that's what she said.

Wow thanks diamond seeker, I didn't know WF has such a low price setting. So I should stick will 14k white gold I assume? Can you show me the 4 prong please. I like the simple prong, doesn't look that bad, but do you think the 6 prong would cover my .75 ct too much?

I would go with an upgradable stone, and get the least expensive setting they have for now. When you are able to upgrade for your final diamond, then spend the money on a more expensive setting. I'd get either the 4 or 6 prong setting:

I was looking at Brian Gavin site, and found a similar setting but it seems to be a bit thinner on the ring setting stats.

How have you all like the thickness of your setting, thicker or thinner? My ring size is 5.5.

That's a personal preference. I like thinner settings- and I feel thinner settings make a stone look bigger.
