Just curious about the prevaling sentiment on this site. I have my own opinion, but am curious if I will be right in how I have judge the PSers.

So the question is:

If given the choice between upgrading your original engagement ring, or buying a nicer ring and wearing it on your other finger, what would you choose?

Keep original engagement ring or replace it with an upgrade?

While I am a guy and this really doesn''t apply to me, I would lean towards keeping the original ring and just getting my wife a new ring for a different finger.

Neither. I would keep the original diamond and set it in a pendant or something. Then get a new ering.

I''m a sentimentalist.... I would get a new ring :)

I would and did reset my original into a rhr and got a new diamond for my left hand.

my vote is also to keep the original and buy a new ring...more bling

Out with the old and in with the new...DH and I both agreed on this

I am way too sentimental to part with my original! Ok, my original engagement diamond was reset into another setting (original setting was damaged). My husband and I had this discussion and he was fine with me trading in my stone, I am the one that said NO WAY!

I also could not part with my original diamond. I have not yet reset it, but I plan to eventually. I wear the new diamond as my e-ring.

I''m getting a new ring but keeping the original. For now, I put it away in my safe box. Eventually I''ll reset it into something.

My fiance has stated his preference for me to keep my orginal and just buy another for my Right hand. HOWEVER, if it were not for this request, I would upgrade my original ring rather than buy a RHR.

I would probably change the setting so i can still keep the original rock.

I kept my old ring in my jewelry box (will give to me daughter when she is old enough to take care of it) and I wear the new ring. Would never get rid of the original or trade it.

I would keep and continue to wear my original ring and get a new RHR. Unless something dreadful (damage, etc.) should happen, I''ll never get rid of or change my engagement/wedding rings.

I had planned to keep the original set ( very sentimental) and get a larger e-ring and matching wedding ring, but it was not to be. Shortly after I received the new set, the old one "disappeared" (probable theft). Lesson learned : put valuables in safe asap.

ok, a follow up question now. The reason for the change, was it because of financial limitations when you first became engaged or because of changes in fashion/style?

I have kept my .25ct ring and have a new one now. We got the new one for personal reasons and also because we have more money now

My original e-ring was 0.21 ct, and after two babies, it no longer fit. My new ring is 1.50 ct and I got it for our 25th wedding anniversary. Yes, our financial circumstances were much improved. That original stone was pretty small, even back when I got engaged. But I see many ladies my age still wearing their original rings, and the diamonds are often under 0.50 ct. Much as I would like to keep/wear the original ring, the diamond is too small to be worth resetting. So, I think what you do with the original ring or stone depends on your circumstances and preferences. My change was not because of fashion. I just always wanted a beautiful, sparkly diamond ring!!

I re-set my original stone. When we got engaged, we had financial limitations. In fact, DF plunked down most of his net signing bonus from his very first job for it.

We have financial limitations (grad students) now that we hope not to have in a few years, so when we upgrade we'll get something that is a bit bigger. But we didn't want to wait to get engaged/married until we're done with our Ph.D.'s or else we'd have to wait at least another 3 years and probably more!

Well, we were 21 when we got married, so yeah, we''re a lot better able to buy diamonds now! My original stone was 1 carat and just average quality. We knew zero about diamonds at the time and were lucky to get as good a stone as we did. But my new one is far better quality overall, not just larger.

I am going through this very dilemma right now....but, would never trade in my original diamond... too many happy memories and most of all good karma. The day my husband proposed was the happiest day of my life and that ring was there, he picked it out with love ...and it''s been with me every day since. However, we are in the position to upgrade (10yr anniv and green light from hubby!)... and I''m excited about the possibility of a larger/better quality stone. Will keep the original e-ring intact to wear ( I still love it, and it''s sentimental)...and switch off with the two rings.

Ditto with LWD--First ring only 1/5 carat since we were graduate students. Almost any size diamond on a right hand ring would''ve just made my wedding ring look smaller and I wanted a bigger diamond on my wedding ring anyway. Initially was goingto put bigger diamond in original setting, but once diamond was purchased we decided it wouldn''t look right. I am in process of picking out new setting--we will keep original ring and wear it occasionally. Husband specifically wanted original ring untouched for sentimental reasons.

I also would want to know why you are considering upgrading her e-ring in the first place...for the same reasons mentioned by other posters.

I''m still happy with my e-ring after 4 years, so I would tell you to get her a gorgeous RHR if I knew you were both content for the time being with her e-ring. I need details, lol!

If that last question was directed at me, I am not even married yet. It was just a curiousity question with the amount of conversation on this forum about upgrading is all. I am way too much of a sentimentalists and traditionalists to think about upgrading an engagement ring.
