Upgrade a little now, or wait?

I currently have a 1.63 carat round stone that I would someday like to be around 2.4-2.5ish. I am busy saving for this upgrade, since it won''t be inexpensive! I have enough saved now that I could upgrade to somewhere around a 1.85, which would snag me another .3mm in size. Do you think it''s worth it to upgrade for .3mm? Would I be able to see that much of a difference, or should I just wait a little while longer until I can get more of a .5mm increase? The only part that''s a bummer is that to get another .5mm, I have to cross the 2 carat mark which greatly increases the price to do the upgrade! Thoughts?

I would try to compare sizes in person to get a feel whether it is worth it to you, make sure you compare well cut diamonds such as AGS0 Peerless from Jareds or Hearts on Fire. For me that increase wouldn't be worth it but if you could see for yourself that would be best. Also make sure to compare diameters rather than weight, carat weight doesn't always represent visual size. Personally I would wait and really maximize the size increase but have a look in person as that way you will know the best way to proceed.

If you have a certain size as the ultimate goal in mind, then I would recommend that you wait. If you get a temporary "filler", you will not be 100% happy and will always think about upgrading again. The process of upgrade can be time-consuming, resource draining, and expensive. Don''t forget the extra cost of shipping/insurance, purchase of setting (you may need a new setting for a larger stone), and etc.. What will you do with the old stone and the old ring setting? You may be able to trade in your stone with certain vendors, but this option can be restrictive. The restriction of buying again from the same vendor may limit your choice of stones, especially that availaility of larger size stones may be an issue.

personally I''d wait, think about the additonal fee on getting that stone set into a setting, if you do it now - will you have to get a whole new setting? or just replace the head? if you have to get a whole new setting then that sets you back as well because that money you just spent on a new setting could go towards your final stone fund kwim? because you''ll end up having to replace that setting again when you upgrade again. Just a thought.

You all make really good points. I knew I could count on my PS friends to give sound advice. It''s so tempting to want it *NOW* but I also know that waiting is a more solid decision.

Waiting is hard but good things come to those who wait!

Wait. .3mm is not much difference IMO.

I think so, make that upgrade and size difference count! You will be happier for it!
