Hi everyone, I've posted my engagement ring on here before. It's a 0.61ct round with 0.10ct straight baguette sides, set in platinum. It was completely hand made by a jeweller here in New Zealand. Now, I've had an issue with it before. One of the baguette sides came slightly loose several months ago and I sent it back for free tightening.

The problem now is that one of the baguettes has cracked, right across the width of it. Luckily it is insured but since this isn't the first time there's been a problem with the baguettes (and quite likely won't be the last) I'm considering a re-do.

My question is: if I get replacement baguettes (I guess both will need to be replaced, as they're a matching pair) then will these issues keep cropping up? I wear the ring 99% of the time, only taking it off at night sometimes. Is this amount of wear simply too hard on it? I haven't knocked it significantly that I remember. Also, the baguettes are quite cheap to replace, no?

I intend to continue to wear my ring as I have been once it is fixed up.

The other style that I love is the Sholdt semi-bezel. Would this be more practical? The girdle on my diamonds is Medium - Slightly Thick. But would an insurance company be willing to let me re-do the ring in a completely different style?

Replacing a baquette is no big deal. A reputable jeweler can replace it in days for not a lot of money. Just do it I have a marquis eternity band with 22 stones and I have lost a few over the years ....

Although rare, breaks/cracks do happen. Sorry...

Both do not need to be replaced. 99% of the time is probably causing you problems. You need to take it off for any hard/heavy work.
I don't think most people on PS sleep in their rings either. Baguettes cheap? Depends what you consider cheap. Depends on your jeweler.

You probably shouldn't but I know some people like to wear theirs all the time.

A Sholdt semi-bezel would be pretty practical. It protects a lot of the girdle. No, an insurance company would not replace the whole
ring due to a broken side stone (well, not here in the States).

I have baguette side stones. My ring is 16 years old. I do not wear it around the house or at night. It stays a lot cleaner that way
and NOT broken. ;)

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

I understand there are issues with wearing any diamond ring 99% of the time. However, I'm not rough with my hands, I don't have a physical job and I do take my ring of before gardening etc where it could get knocked. How could I possibly damage it in my sleep? I figure it's safer on my finger than on my nightstand. I don't ever wake up with bruises. My husband would sure let me know if I started moving around a lot in my sleep :)

So basically you recommend I just stick with the style and setting I've got now, replace the baguette with insurance and just be more careful? I'll end up never wearing the blimmin thing and that's what I didn't want. I love it and enjoy wearing it so much, it seems such a shame to only wear it on special occasions. Also, I'm rather forgetful so I'd be liable to leave it somewhere if I take it off all the time!

Yes, they keep breaking. You need to change your wear habits.

That said, I ADORE the Sholdt and do think that's probably a smart change for you. And yes, it is more practical than for you to keep replacing baguettes again and again.
