Once again I am looking at stones cut by Richard Homer (I think I am addicted and may need an intervention), only this time for a ring. There are two candidates for the centre stone.

Basically, the ring will have a sort of band of meteors, for lack of a better description, flanking the centre stone. Small diamonds and other small sapphires will be incorporated into the design. Some engraving to accentuate
certain features will be used as well, and the ring will have a tapered shape (wider than the centre stone at the apex of the ring, and narrowing down to 3 mm at the bottom. The diamond and sapphire melee will not go all the way around the band.

Which shape do you like? Thanks for any input.

Oooh, Gale! Lucky you to be in such a quandry!

I wish I could get a better idea of what the mounting will look like...can you find/post a picture of somethng similar?

Since I'm such a gemstone nut, I'd probably pick the stone with the best color, sparkle, saturation, etc. etc. If I couldn't see them myself side by side, I'd want to pick the brains of the vendor and follow his preference.

Judging from the pictures, either one would be a knockout!

Can't wait to hear what you decide, and to follow your process in mounting it. It sounds fabulous!

edited to add: I just saw canuk-gal's post. I hadn't noticed the second stone was an antique cushion cut (too blinded by the incredible color, perhaps). I'm partial to cushions, too!

HI:

Here is my intervention--get both!!! Just kidding, but I do love RH stones too.....
But since you asked, I am partial to the antique cushion cut--just seems to have (regal) airs about it (is that gramatically correect?). Just MHO.

P.S. Have you set your other RH stones? Yummy green if memory serves......

cheers--Sharon

Wow that''s a toughie, If pressed I would pick the cushion. You can''t go wrong with either of them though. Widget is right Go with the one that has the better saturation etc... I''m no help at all, sorry!!

Something about that round one just speaks to me!! Both are fabulous, what a hard decision!

Wow! Thanks for the fast replies everyone. Here''s the image of the inspiration ring. This ring was made (I think) by someone in Calgary. The ring will deviate considerably from this, but the image will provide the gist of the final product.

Hey canuk-gal! The tourmalines have not made it to the jewller. The amethysts, on the other hand, should be ready very soon.

Widget, you''re right.

Here''s what Richard had to say about the candidates:

I have a fine blue Sapphire in particular that I think would be an
excellent candidate for your consideration. It is registry # 5267,
weighing 1.08ct and measuring 6.3mm in length but only 5.2mm in
width.....a nice aesthetically pleasing length to width ratio but
affording better design integration.
I have attached an image of this gem, but, it looks too violetish in my
computer monitor. The gem, in real life, has a wonderful deep blue
color without any noticeable secondary hues at all, very clean, very
homogenous in its color, very saturate, and of course, very brilliant.
It has virtually the perfect combination of both depth of color and yet
a light enough tone to show unparalleled brilliance....especially for
its shape with a length to width ratio.
Another great consideration, if a round is still a preference, is
registry #5247. It is a superb blue Sapphire very much like the
quality of the antique cushion but just a bit more saturate, a bit more
intense. And, of course, being a round...it is a bit more lively. I
have attached an image of this gem too, but neither photos do the gems
justice.

WOW!!!!Now I''m officially pea-green with envy. That ring is incredible!!!!

I''m dying, here....

HI Gale:

Wonderful ring--but I wonder who in cowtown designed it--you''d think I''d recognize it''s design the way I get around to our cities jewellers!!! LOL! (perhaps I need an intervention as well......)

cheers--Sharon

Sharon, I was trying to find the name of the guy that made this ring, but I cannot find his site any longer. I really believe it was a Calgary jeweller. That image has been in my posession for over a year, and I have never seen anything like it before. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that something like that would be coming down the pike for me. I am VERY excited, although the ring is a long way off from being worn or even made. We decided to just get all of the pieces we need together before commencing the work sometime next year. It is destined to be my wedding ring. We talked about it being my engagement ring, but it''s going to be fairly wide once the stone is in place as it stands. Adding a wedding ring to it would be just too much width for my short fingers.

I think I''ll go with the round, given Richard''s statement about the colour and brilliance. Thanks for the sound advice on that Widget (as she wavers towards the cushion....)

HI:

Beautiful choice--both in ring style and in (either) stone. The result will be sublime....
In the interm, I''ll keep my eye peeled for any accompanying pieces....LOL

cheers--Sharon

I prefer the round...and I don''t usually care for rounds.

I like the round. The round brilliance seems more balanced in the picture plus rounds are ussually harder to come by.

I love the round..Looks like you could get lost in it!!!
