I turn forty in forty months. I am thinking, this should be a cause for great celebration once I reach that milestone. What would be a great thing that I could work towards now, and really look forward to turning forty to enjoy?

Those of you who have reached forty, what did you do to celebrate?

Are you thinking of working towards purchasing something large, or accomplishing something large?

I threw a big house party for DH when he turned in April. All of his close friends came, and we ate his favorite foods--pizza and chocolate! Sounds like a kid's party, but he loved it. I was originally planning on doing something nice at a ritzy sit down place, but he caught wind of the idea and said he'd rather have a house party with pizza.

I did nothing for my 40th birthday :(( my birthday is Dec 30, everyone is worn out from Christmas and getting ready for New Years so my birthday usually just gets ignored (not looking for smypathy, just stating a fact!), however it is a pretty big milestone in life and you should celebrate, my 50th is this year and if money allowed you can bet I would be buying me a little pretty something to celebrate, but its not in the cards :errrr:

AAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGH!!!! I CRIED on my 40th birthday!!! I hated to see the "4", it really make me realize that I need to get my life in gear and stop making excuses for un-reached goals.

I actually got my pear ring for my 40th - as a "ease my way" into older age :P That's how I celebrated, personally. I begged my hubby to not make a big deal out of it. We just went to a movie and a dinner into a pretty young and hip place. It was cool :)

Really, I don't feel like I am in my 40's at all. I still remember running 10 miles in my mid 20's and never really gave a thought about it. Now if I even try to run 50 feet, I am panting lol. But I feel better about my whole person and if that came with turning 40, then it's quite alright in my book!

I love being in my 40's ! life is so much better / easier now. I had one of my best birthdays ever on my 40th, I had to work and we have this big greaseboard in the break room that everybody wrote stuff on and they had a potluck. It was so sweet and I had a great night! (I am pretty easy to please) Like Haven asked, are you thinking accomplishment or event or bling? Are you a traveler? I am thinking in 6 years on my 50th I would like to be in paris again, maybe plan a awesome trip? :appl:

I had a girls weekend planned in the caribbean for my 40th BUT 3 months before my bday I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd child. There goes my weekend of cocktails :errrr:

So I changed my plans from a girls weekend away to a weekend away with my husband for my 40th. We went to the CT casinos, dinner, shopping and some much needed alone time before our new additional arrived.

I can't tell you how great the 40s are. I loved my 30s but feel like it just gets better in your 40s.

This is all very encouraging. I do love to travel, but haven't made it past Canada yet. I'm also thinking along the lines of Amethyste, that it would be a great time to get something huge and shiny. (And lose another 40 pounds!)

DH and I took a cruise for my 40th. Being relaxed at sea and getting massaged sure made it easier to deal with :wink2: I also started working out 6 months before because I wanted to be "40 and Fabulous". I lost 20 pounds and was in the best shape of my life! That also helped take the sting out of it.

I am off to Morocco just after my 40th. I can't wait to be 40! :appl:

I will be turning 50 in February. My husband is deployed to the Middle East, so I will be celebrating alone ;( So, I decided to go to Kauai :appl: I will be there for a few days by myself, including my actual Birthday, but my sister will be joining me for a week and my dad and step mom will just happen to be there for a few days during that time as well. I have visions of sitting poolside or laying on the beach sipping something fruity all day on my Birthday :appl:

I can hardly wait!!!

I pierced my ears for the first time ... went out for waffles & later had a hike & picnic along the Hudson River w/my DH & pup. It bit tight financially at the time. No big bling or trip was in the cards. Nor the new puppy I'd always told myself I'd get at forty. Oh well. It was a nice day anyway. And I filled up dem holes with diamonds eventually! ;)) (Still waiting on the new pup. But so incredibly grateful the pup I already have is still by my side.)

Happy Future Fortieth! :appl:

I did absolutely nothing. In fact, to make a long story short, my hubby was going to a football game on my b/d. He didn't realize what day it was....what's more is that he didn't even know what month it was. I walked of giggling. He thought I was crying. He said the he would cancel. I said well you already told you'll go, so go. And I wasn't crying, I was laughing at you, dear. Your such a BOOB!

JD's got 4 years to save up. I've asked for a tummy tuck and better boobs than the sagging lopsided jobbies I got now. And maybe some sort of resurfacing on my face. After I'm all healed up from that, he's taking me someplace..I don't know where, but someplace. Vegas, a cruise, something.

For my 40th birthday present, I got a Cartier Tank Francaise watch. It represented to me the time I've had and the time I have left (as well as a reminder not to waste any of it!)

When I was 8 years old, I remember thinking 12 was old.
When I was 12, I thought 25 was old.
When I was 25, I thought 40 was old.
Now that I'm in my early 40s, I'm thinking 90 is getting older.

FWIW, I have really enjoyed the 40s. It is such a joy to look around and witness so many women role models who are older than me, and yet who are still so active, vibrant, and beautiful! They defy all the old stereotypes. It is such a relief to know that just because you pass the milestone of 40, you are not destined for mom jeans, short hair, slow cars, and sensible shoes.
Embrace it! It's gonna be great! :appl:

40...I am gunning for a trip to Scotland that year.
