Hi everyone,
I am trying to decide between two princess-cut diamonds for an engagement ring, and I was hoping to get some well-informed opinions on the matter! I initially purchased a loose diamond online with the intent to get the setting done from a local jeweler, but I just came back from that local jeweler having decided to go with one of his diamonds instead.
The online diamond is 0.92 carat, H, VVS2, Excellent Polish and Very Good Symmetry, with a table of 69%, a depth of 74.9%, and a medium - thick girdle. The local jeweler (LJ) diamond is 0.94 carat, H, VVS2, Excellent Polish and Very Good Symmetry, with a table of 73% , a depth of 75.1% and a slightly thick - thick girdle.
I know that the table and depth percentages (as well as the girdle) of the online diamond are better, and it was a very nice diamond with a lot of "fire" and "brilliance", but there was a darker shadow in the center bottom of the diamond that I was observing. I compared the two diamonds side-by-side for a long time (an hour), and both diamonds seemed absolutely beautiful. The LJ diamond seemed "clearer" than the online diamond -- meaning that it seemed like you could see through the diamond a bit more / the facets were more clear and defined, but the thing that was bothering me about the LJ diamond was that there were, when moving the diamond back and forth, some black/darker shadows on some of the facets that would appear that I thought were due to lack of light return. The LJ insisted that that was, in actuality, evidence of better optical properties.
Since both performed seemingly quite well optically (to me), and because the LJ diamond seemed bigger (due to both the larger carat weight and the larger table percentage), and because I thought it better to make the entire ER a package deal from one location, I ended up getting the LJ diamond.
But now I'm second-guessing myself and thinking about the table and depth percentages and the fact that I saw some darker shadows on the bottom facets (as opposed to in the center bottom of the online diamond) when viewing it from certain angles. So based on this (rambling) post, is there any advice you can give me regarding these two diamonds? Is the diamond being more "clear" and having more well-defined lines/facets necessarily a good thing? (From http://www.bluenile.com/signature-ideal-princess-diamonds,,, it seems like the less clear diamond is actually a better cut?)
Any advice on this matter would be much appreciated, as I'm clearly confused now about which diamond to go with! Thank you so much for all of your help and guidance! (P.S. I've attached the ASET image of the online diamond to this post.)
