Hi, Im very new here this is my first post...I am from NY about 30 minutes from manhattan.
i have just started looking for stones, I went to a jeweler in Garden City, and Fortunoff to get an idea of what type of stones I would like.
Im still very indecisive. I like Asscher, emerald, Princess, radiant,

I would like to take a trip into the Manhattan this Saturday 10/1/05
I want to have at least 2 or 3 good jewerly places to go to...I dont want to feel overwhelmed as I am not buying that day. Does anyone know of any really great trustworthy jewelers OPen on Saturday in Manhattan

Any suggestions will be helpful, if anyone knows of place on
long island please let me know also I went to H.L. Gross in garden city.

Thanks Nicole

Check out http://www.goodoldgold.com they are on Long Island I believe and is a very reputable vendor here on PS. A lot of people here buy from them.

What about those jewelers in Chinatown by Bowery street. Are they trustworthy? I mean they come with certs and are willing to go tax free if you pay cash. any experience?

Rather than recreating the wheel, I'd take advantage, add in visits to Excel Diamonds/Superbcert (if they're open, or go on a day to hit them otherwise), along with GOG, and call it a day. Both should provide attractive options, with GOG icing on the cake.

Regards,

If you're just going on a scouting trip and want to try on some designer rings, I recommend Michael C. Fina on 45th and 5th. They are a reputable jeweler, I just wouldn't necessarily buy from them as their prices are very high. But it's a great place to start because they let you try on all their great stuff including JB Star, Michael B, Scott Kay, Tacori, etc. You can at least get some ideas from there and decide what you like and don't like. Most of the places on 47th Street are closed on Saturdays but you can still walk down the street and pop into any place that happens to be open. Just don't let them force you into anything. They will be very pushy but if you're not ready to buy, do not let them intimidate you or charm you into doing it on that day! I have only been to the Jewelry Exchange on Bowery once. It's like a mini version of the Diamond District, all housed in one little complex. I'm not sure how trustworthy those guys are so I can't really offer any suggestions or advice.

Edited to add that I agree that if you are on Long Island, you should definitely go to Good Old Gold. Many people who post here have had wonderful experiences with them...

Thanks eveyrone for your input!!! very helpful

I did a walk around the DD on a Saturday & over to Fortunoff''s to look at the Royal Asschers back in July.

I actually picked out my setting & stone from Golda Jewelry at 29 W. 47th. I know my future fiance hasn''t picked it up or had it appraised yet so can''t tell you how the whole process went ... but I liked the variety of settings they had, they showed me some lovely custom work, and Albert was very charming & nice & understanding throughout my visit there and subsequent contacts.

Overall that Saturday I checked out almost everywhere that was open - some were pushy, some low key ... you get a good idea of their stuff by the windows. Def. a good place to narrow down your shapes, sizes, color preferences & try a lot of settings on your hand. I DRASTICALLY changed what I thought I wanted by trying stuff on. So suprising!

Have fun!

I am leaning more Toward the Asscher

I also definately want an extremely thin band with micro pave, i know someone who has a cushion with this think micro pave setting and its gorgeous some people tell me its to much, but i seem to like it alot.

emerald is nice, but im not sure if i want that clear see through look u get with asschers and emeralds

i like princess and radiant also alot too.

THanks for all the advice its really great..

is the Royal Asschers and Asscher one in the same? where are they located? I''m in the market for a stone too and have taken the info I''ve leared on PS and the forums with me when I shop, however, I''ve only been to the bowery stores because they are opened 24/7. For a working man, its hard to hit the DD on weekdays given that they are closed on weekends.

as for GOG. I heard many good things about them, but are they willing to discount off stones? or whatever the prices is set is what you pay? another reason why Im leaning towards the Bowery street vendors is because If you pay cash, they will waive tax... which is a pretty steep saving. Will GOG do the same>?

Thank you so much for your help, i am making an appt for good old gold this weekend...

Hi;
In Roosevelt Field there is Christian Bernard, it is very good. I have bought things from there and would recomend them to you.
Also I would recommend going to Mimi So''s, the store is in the diamond district close to 5th ave. They seem very helpful and not pushy at all which is always nice.
Good luck.

Phil

I don''t think any business owner would care to state on a public forum that they are breaking the law by not charging tax.

Wouldn''t such a question have a better chance for an answer in private?

Besides, it is all just words.
I''m sure they keep books and pay tax, even if they tell you they didn''t charge tax.

They are just offering a discount equivalent to the tax rate. Right?

GOG BEST JEWLER IN NY STATE. They have everything and amazing service. Make an appointment

Let me start my answer with a question. How reliable or trustworthy is someone likely to be who is willing to break the law and says so to you right at the outset of a business deal? IMO, that would be a reason to steer clear, not buy from them. My daddy always says, "Someone who will lie to you will steal from you as well." Buyer beware, and also trust but verify leap to mind. Sorry if that''s not what you want to hear.

How did it go Nicole? Did you learn a lot? Find any beauties???

I went to Good old Gold first, I did not have an appointment but Tim helped us right away, I did see 2 asschers that were a around a carat, and I saw one emerald that was 1.5 carats. Because I did not call him in advance that was all he had, but he is getting more 2-3 carat asschers and emeralds in for this week maybe next week with the holidays. I think gog is a great store.

Next I went to London Jewelers, I was interested in a Vera Wang setting I saw online. They did not have it, but they are trying this week to get some settings and stones in for me, no lower than F and VS1.

Next I went to TIFFANYS I know everyone on here hates them, but i wanted to look, the salesgirl was very nice, they did not have much selection but were going to try to get some rings around the size i was looking for in the settings she showed me in a catalog. I am not sure if I would buy from TIFFANYS but i heard they have a guarantee on this site of a lifetime trade in value of the ring, which is nice, not that i would want to trade it in but in case, i did. quality is important and also the setting is important to me. i need to see the rings up close.
thanks for your help, hopefully by next saturday I will get some calls with some rings and stones
Thanks for the help
