Hello, I am new to pricescope even though I have looked on the site for many helpful hints. I am getting ready to pick out my engagement ring. I have a budget of $2000 that I am trying to stay in. I think I found the setting that will give me more bang for our buck. The trellis engagement setting from Abazias. I will have to go with a round or a princess cut stone. I am thinking about ordering the ring online vs. the store. In Memphis, TN we have a local jeweler who is suppose to be wholesale. I went there the other day to put down a payment on one of their rings, he said he could not do a layaway if it is not a ring already in his case. If he has to order a diamond, you have to pay for it at the time of selection. All of this made no sense to me because the rings that were already set, the diamonds had horrible quality. And I know of tons of people who have put their rings in layaway. Now I know they did not get good quality diamonds. Sorry for rambling. So now I have come to the conclusion that I could get a better deal online. So what is everyone''s thoughts on the trellis engagement ring setting.

I am getting the Vatche royal x-prong. You can get it in white gold and come in under your limit or platinum is just over 1800. I don't know if 2000 is total or just the setting. Here's the link.... http://www.goodoldgold.com/setting/V-102/
The people at good old gold have been great to work with.

Is your budget for the setting $2000 or is that the budget for the entire ring?

If the 2k is for the entire ring, then I can say that the price Abazias has for the trellis setting is MUCH cheaper than I have seen an x-prong/trellis go for elsewhere. It''s 14k gold verus the 18k I''ve seen elsewhere, though.

I can''t comment on quality as I''ve never bought from them, but I can comment generally on trellis settings. My e-ring looks pretty close to the one you''ve linked to, and I am very happy with it. It doesn''t sit too low or too high, and the diamond looks well protected.

HTH!

Your budget will definitely get you a gorgeous 0.5 carat round stone with no easily visible flaws in a stylish setting if H color is fine with you - it seems to be for most of the folks on PriceScope. By "no easily visible flaws," I mean that it would require someone intently looking for them. My own engagement ring is H color, and it looks bright and white in its white gold setting; the cut makes all the difference in the world. A very well cut I-color stone will look brighter than a badly-cut D, but cost a lot less.

And you're right that something's not right about your local jeweler requiring payment in advance for bringing in other stones. He should be willing to bring in several stones that come close to your description for you to look at; your requested stones would not be that hard to find. It wouldn't be fair to ask him to bring in a bunch of 1 carat stones with nice cut, color and clarity if you know you're only going to spend $2,000, but it's perfectly reasonable for you to ask him to bring in a few 1/2 carat G's, H's and I's with clarity VS1 through SI1, and AGS or GIA certificates. You can find excellently cut stones in that range online from $1200-$2400. Your local jeweler would have to charge a bit more, but you should be able to stay on budget and get an awesome 1/2 carat.

Examples of excellently-cut stones under $1600 (will be less if you send a wire transfer, which usually runs $15 from your bank):

0.57 ct H SI1: http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-912968.htm#

0.53 ct H SI1: http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-912965.htm#

0.53 ct I VS1: http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-912971.htm#

0.57 ct I SI1: http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-415695.htm# (only $1317, but you would need to ask them about how the clouds affect the appearance)

Hang around here, read the tutorial, and after all that, you'll either be able to get what you want out of your local jeweler, or will find it online. If you find something online you think might be what you want, stick it up here, and you'll get tons of opinions. Any of the good online stores will be willing to discuss the strong and weak points of the stones you're considering.

Good luck!

I love a trellis X-prong. We ordered the Simon G X-prong. Its LP1509. I am waiting for photos still ;)

That ring is a beauty.

I think that $2000 is a nice budget to work with, and the trellis type settings are gorgeous. I am glad you foud Pricescope, there are so many people that can help you find something wonderful within your price range.

I don''t think the budget is for the setting alone. I think it''s for the diamond and the setting, in which case the abazias one is probably your best bet. I ditto jsm''s post.
