“Jewelry with the toxic metal cadmium is showing up on the shelves of national retailers including Ross, Nordstrom Rack and Papaya, according to newly released test results.

Analysis done for the nonprofit Center for Environmental Health revealed some jewelry sold with women's dresses and shirts was nearly pure cadmium, which can cause cancer and reproductive harm after prolonged exposure.

Consumer advocates were hopeful cadmium had disappeared from the US jewelry market following changes prompted by a 2010 Associated Press investigation that found Chinese manufacturers were using the metal to make kids' jewelry.

States including California outlawed cadmium in children's jewelry, and testing by the center found the chemical had virtually disappeared from jewelry by 2012. No laws address cadmium in adult jewelry, however, and last year the center decided to check those products.

Dang.. if that's true that makes me glad I can't wear costume jewellery. And makes me not want to ever get any for my kid either. I hope they fix that Asap!

I worry about this, and lead. And in fine jewelry I worry about Ruthenium, although I haven’t been able to find info about its safety to “contact” vis a vis jewelry, I do know it’s extremely toxic during smelting.

Unfortunately an awful lot of things do come from China. Even a high end ring is probably made with parts from China, or cleaned with something from China, or from alloys created in China. A lot of bench people, especially small or independent workers, will have no good way of knowing the quality of their materials.
