I am getting an upgrade for my 3rd anniversary from my .31 F SI1 to a half carat..unsure of specs now.
I currently have a solitaire setting, but cannot decide if I should keep my setting or upgrade to a halo?
I'm unsure if it's going to be worth it because the halo settings I'm looking at are priced higher than what the center stone is going to cost!
Any opinions are much appreciated along with photos of .50 ct rings, solitaire or halos!!

Will this be your last upgrade? If yes, then halo! If no, then I wouldn't.

Good advice, and I agree :))

If you have the budget to put toward a new setting, I would add that money to your stone, and get a bigger stone and keep it in your current setting. If that makes sense? I would rather have a bigger diamond in a non-halo than a smaller diamond in a halo. My opinion is that a halo does not make the DIAMOND look bigger, but it makes the overall RING look bigger. Congrats on your upgrade!

No, definitely not my last! I never even thought of that!
I'll save the extra for my 2 ct ;)

I knew I could count on you PS'ers for GREAT advise!!

Ditto. At that ct weight, every little mm increase is really noticable, so well worth putting the money to ct. rather than the setting.

That said, Halo's are stunning and really give better hand presence, so if you think it could be a while then it might still be worth the investment. Why don't you try some rings on and decide based on what you like the look of on your hand?

I agree with Dreamer. When you upgrade from this diamond, you could put a colored stone in your halo setting and wear it as a RHR. Now doesn't that sound tempting :saint:

Agree totally.

I would put the money to a bigger stone as well. That could really add extra size to your bling if you are wanting to work up to
the 2 carat. I love a good halo, and I think it gives you great finger presence as well, but I would get your stone where you want
it first.

I went from a .80ct to a 1.2ct to a 1.7ct in three years. No word of a lie, I wish I had haloed my .80ct, I know it would have made me happy with the size for a really really long time and saved a pretty penny too ;))

i love halo's, so yes: do halo  and you get awesome finger coverage ;)

i say yes, halo! I agree with dreamer, if the halo will give you the finger presence you would like until you can upgrade again, and it might be some time before you can, then you should do it!

I vote no. I love my classic solitaire. I have a one carat diamond band, a plain band and two pink sapphire and diamond bands to put it with depending on my mood. I hated that a halo felt like it gave me no options (keeping in mind that I am VERY ocd about the width of the band, size of the stones etc matching).

i vote NO to halo. i agree with the earlier posters who said to put the $ toward a bigger stone.

by increasing the diameter of your main stone, you'll be increasing finger coverage!

I would also put the money toward the ct weight of your stone rather than the setting. I too have upgraded my stone and setting over the past couple of years. I went from a .39 to a 1.0 to a 1.52 to my final 2.01. During the upgrades I also changed the setting and looking back, wasted good $$ on settings that now sit unused. Once you reach your final stone size you will have many options for the final setting. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth :D

I'd agree with the other posters. If this is going to be your final upgrade, then by all means I would halo. Especially on a 1/2 stone I think it would give the center more presence on your finger. If you foresee yourself upgrading in the near future, you should probably spend the bucks on a slightly larger stone. Good luck.

totally agree with this statement. Like you said- the halo setting is more than your stone... if 3-5-10 years from now you upgrade again, that halo setting s useless for your diamond. I say, if you know there is a possibility of an upgrade again in a few yars, then stick with your current solitaire setting. If this is "it" for the long haul.... then by all means, glam it up with a halo and enjoy your forever ring!

I vote "no" to halo and "yes" to saving for a bigger diamond. As lovely as halo's are, to me they look more like they should be a dinner ring rather than an engagement ring. Perhaps you could get a halo around something *colorful* for a RHR if you're craving a halo?
