To start: Thanks to everyone who's donated a veritable wealth of experience and knowledge found in these forums, and special thanks to David for getting me set up with an Ideal-Scope, tweezers and scope so quickly and to M.ssr Holloway for the HCA. I only wish that I had found these forums earlier than this week!

I found this stone for $6,000 (after ebates and a rebate from Citibank totaling about $350):

1.001 E VS2 (though I can see some tiny tiny specks with my naked eye) 61%, 54% GIA good good Med-Thick none none 6.46-6.37 X 3.91

Got the Sarin report: Crown angle 32.5, Cr Hgt 14.3%, Pavil angle 40.3, Pavil depth 42.3% culet 0.5% table 54% depth 61% 3.91 mm girdle thickness 2.4-4.3 thickProportion 3 good

HCA 1.5 (VG, EX, EX, VG)

Seems like there's a lot of weight around the girdle (but I don't mind it). I really like the way that it's icy/bright and sparkly and I really have to peer into it from below to see any inclusions. With a loupe I can easily see some specks but they don't annoy me.

I am having a ring made (Vanessa) by designet in Grand Island NY. I hope that works out.

Are there any comments or suggestions to me before I move forward and get this stone appraised and set? Can anyone recommend an appraiser in Suffolk County, LI (NY)?

I will try to attach an Ideal-Scope photo. It was hard to get a halfway decent shot. No, this isn't a Hearts and Arrows stone, I know but I think it looks decent for amateur eyes like mine. I mean, I don't think I got a turkey. Any thoughts?

Again, I'd like to thank everyone for their past and future constructive comments on this forum. I even have to thank the much-maligned Fred Cuellar for the GIA information and comments in his "How to Buy a Diamond" book.

Peace, God Bless and Happy Fourth!

Craig

p.s. I apologize for the horrible HTML and the outrageously gigantic picture. :-(

First off, Happy Fourth Of July, Craig!

Well, you already know that the thick girdle is hiding a bit of weight, and if this doesn't bother you, it's okay. I am a bit surprised that you can see the VS 2-setting inclusions that easy - shouldn't be that obvious... But you may have an eagle eye!

As for the appraiser, you may want to have a look at the appraiser section of this site -- just below the banner on the top of the page.

There are links/tel.no's of the most reputable appraisers around, and I am sure there's someone in the NY area.

Looks like a perfectly beautiful diamond to me

It may have been impossible to align stone, Iscope an d camera by hand precisely enough to see exactly how precise those arrows are, but there seems to be strong proof of good light return and contrast in the pic as is.

It does sound surprising that you see those VS inclusions without magnification - who says this is E-VS2? Not that matters much, since you do seem to like the stone, but grades have more to do with the price than does the look, for better or worse.

Giangi, taking your words to heart, I looked again. The inclusions I see are small, maybe the size of a pinhead? visible through the pavilion. Are they obvious? No, not really, and only from a few inches away and only if I take my glasses off. I'm pretty picky, I guess, and they don't bother me. Thanks for the tip on the appraisers; I fired an email off to one of them.

Valeria 101: Thank you for taming my massive photo! It's truly out of control. I tried to re-edit my post to include your shot but it doesn't show up in my edit.

You asked who said it was E-VS2. It says so on the GIA certificate that came with it. The "E" I believe after having compared it to a few other stones. I suppose independent appraisal will either reveal SI1, lower, or confirm VS2.

As for the picture, I took about 12 shots and I think that was the clearest one. I can throw on another picture but, egads, it might be huge too! I don't want to scare the natives. Anyhow, thanks for all your thoughts! Yes, I do like the stone.

Well Craig, I think you said more than I ever could on this and maybe answered your own questions. The only thing I would ask is how many different cuts of stones have youe seen next it? You say it's icy white and brilliant, have you looked at stones cut to show more fire next to it? If so, and you like it, then I thnik you've found your winner.
