In February 2008 I purchased my ring from Gold Old Gold an I SI1 2.39 (AGS 000, GIA excellent) round brillant set in a classic Tiffany''s setting. On another forum someone posted that Tiffany''s has reduced the engagement rings by a certain percentage and she found a 2.3 H VS2 cut ideal for 23,000 USD which is just 2,000 more than I paid. For some reason I always thought that Tiffany 2 carat rings started above 30,000. Now I feel like I should of waited and I could of got a Tiffany''s ring. Am I wrong to think so?

There are several threads where people have shopped in Tiffany with my 2 tools and found that the consistency of the cut quality in Tiffany is good but not great.
It is highly likely that he cut quality of the diamond you bought from GOG is exceptional.

The question you should ask yourself is this:

"Which do I prefer - Do I like the sparkle of the diamond, or the right to say it came from Tiffany?"

Hi,
Yeah, I think you''re wrong mostly because there was no way you could have predicted that Tiffany prices would go down and would you really have wanted to wait an entire year for your eng. ring? Your ring is gorgeous, right? Don''t obsess over what could have been.

Enjoy what you have. There''s always a better deal out there somewhere at sometime, but you can''t put your life on hold waiting for it!

Prices went down, but I don''t think they went down that much. I could be wrong, but I''d investigate that price yourself before you worry about it.

They actually went down a good amount!

You couldn''t have know the pricing was going to go down so don''t be too hard on yourself. I think a lot of it has to do with the economy and supply/demand...

I was in Tiffany's last week and saw a 2.25 ct, I, VVS2 it was 38,000. They also showed me a 2.24 ct, H, VS2 for 51,000. So they are still up there.

I truly doubt it......

What may have gone down over the past year could just as well as gone up. Waiting for prices to change is a gamble that no odd''s maker would give. No doubt, a replacement from GOG might well be less now than in Feb 2008, too. We are so accustomed to steady, rather even inflation that we are somewhat shocked by the recent events which have been staggering to price consistency. Gold, platinum, gasoline, and stocks which have been very high in early 2008 and now have taken a low course. They may continue downward for some time to come and then with little fanfare begin to rise. We know things will change, but we never know when or how. Don''t regret your original decision. You make purchases on the information of the moment. You can''t hope to beat the twists and turns of the market. Tiffany & Co have no reason to compete at the profit margins of Internet vendors. If it comes down to that kind of scenario, then every other area of normalcy will be changed, too. I wouldn''t anticipate such events, ever.

Yes I prefer the sparkle of the diamond over the name, however I am girl who wants it all sparkle and name.

Playing the ''what if'' game is a no win situation. As Dave said, you buy something based on the pricing at that time. None of us has a crystal ball to predict the future. I don''t know what the source of the Tiffany diamond quote was but I seriously doubt someone got a 2 carat stone from Tiffany''s at that price. You can call them and ask for pricing if it will put your mind at ease.

Yes, I''d be in my car on the way to Tiffany''s now if they were selling 2 ct. H VS2''s for $23,000! Somebody either looked at that price tag wrong or they were telling something very untrue!

DITTO this!

I agree with the above. I think their website said 28k wast the starting price for a 2 ct Tiffany solitaire ring. That is down 4k, but still expensive. Remember they raised their prices several times this year, so they probably had to adjust to the market. No matter what you think about their jewelry, I think most can say Tiffany''s is very good at marketing and knows how to respond to the economy. This is a slow economy, and they are already responding. Not only have they brought down their prices, but they have started posting prices in the store by the rings (At least they were last week in Las Vegas). I had never seen that before. They are either sick of people asking, or realize money is on everyone''s mind. BTW the 1 ct rings I saw (I don''t know specs) were between 10-12k.

Tiffany.com''s USA site lists the starting price for a 2 ct. classic Tiffany engagement band at $28,000. I think the lowest color they sell is an I and the lowest clarity is a VS2, so that''s what you''d be looking at for that price.

Coincidentally, 2.3 ct at $14,000/ct is $32,000 - a case of swapped digits?
