My ring has a number inscribed on the inside of the band, which Tiffany referenced in the replacement value sheet I received when I purchased it from Signed Pieces. Tiffany says they can not issue a copy of the original certificate (from GIA?) and cannot facilitate getting one, either.

I don't see why I shouldn't be able to get a copy of it. Does this make sense to anyone else?

If you have the GIA document number you can get a copy from the Internet. Tiffany & Co has little interest in providing services to someone they don''t consider to be theri customer. How would they get compensated for doing the work you are asking them for? If they charged a fee would you consider paying it? Most folks think they are owed documentation, but maybe this is why people who want all the documentation buy from such stores to begin with. Of course, they have paid plenty for the paperwork

No, I don't have the GIA number. I suppose I would be willing to pay a small fee for Tiffany to look it up, but I don't think it should cost a whole lot. I wouldn't think it should take a tremendous amount of time.

It's too bad the original owner didn't ask for this info before selling the ring to Signed Pieces, because I'm sure they paid a lot of extra money for the customer service aspect of a Tiffany piece.

Tiffany is inundated with people who do not buy there wanting documentation. They would be overwhelmed by the activity accepting this work would create. Possibly, you will locate someone who is a known Tiffany customer who can assist you. Sometimes sales staff who have a close relationship with their customers help them out in special ways and cut the red tape......

Thanks for the reply. I guess I do see your (their) point, but I am sending the ring in for resizing and I am going to be paying $170 for that, so I thought maybe they would be willing to help me. I did plan to purchase the matching the wedding band from them, but I was pretty unimpressed with their manner on the phone.

Also, Signed Pieces paid $200 for the replacement value sheet from Tiffany. That seems like an awful lot of money to me, and I would think Tiffany could include a copy of the certificate info for that price. I guess they issue their own certificates now instead of GIA ones. I have no way of knowing which was issued with my ring since I don''t know when it was bought.

I just called again and spoke to someone else at Tiffany, and first they they said they could not look up that info because they don''t have it, and then said it''s just their policy not to look up that info for anyone but the original purchaser because it''s a privacy issue. I don''t want the purchaser''s info, I want the diamond''s info. I asked if I could send the ring in to them and pay for a new certificate and they said no.

i guess I''m a little confused. What documentation did you get from signedpieces. Are you just wanting the GIA cert along with the Tiffany one just so you have it? I do believe you can pay Tiffany''s to reassign the ring in your name so maybe if you did that it might be easier for them to get the info you are after?

mrssalvo, the ring came with two copies of a "retail replacment valuation" issued by Tiffany, which references the number carved on the inside of the ring. It also lists the color, clarity, weight and 3 approximate dimensions. Signed Pieces paid $200 for this documentation. What I would also like to have is a copy of the certificate (whether issued by Tiffany or GIA - there may have even been one of each) that originally came with it. If it was a GIA certificate, I would be thrilled to just have that certificate number, as I could then look the info up on the internet and print that off.

Since they were able to issue a copy of another document regarding the ring, their excuse that it''s all done for privacy reasons does not hold water. Having said that, you may have to pay (again) to get a copy of the other documents. I think the key is going to be finding the person or department at Tiffany that deals with re-issuing documentation (i.e. who did SP talk to when they got the documents they passed on to you?).

My understanding is that not all Tiffany stones even have GIA certification. Many just have the Tiffany certificate. As MrsS said, I thought there was a way to get the new owners name recorded for the item.
