First of all, this is a great community and I appreciate all the honest and straightforward comments. I''ve learned a lot in a short time!

I need some help. I''m considering buying this diamond (for engagement ring) from BN but its a bit over my budget. Of course I do not want to compromise on quality. I''m basically looking for a 1.24/1.25, F/G color, VS1/VS2.

This is the one I''m considering: http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-ideal-cut-g-color-vs2-clarity_LD01479617?filter_id=1

Any thoughts or other recommendations? Something in the 6 to 6.5K range would be ideal...

Thanks in advance all!

Hi Faraz,

I would pass on that one, the angles are not too complimentary.

To get the color and clarity, and good cut you want, you will need to either go down in size, or lower color and clarity to stay at that size, to stay within your budget. Unless your gal is very color sensitive, G-I (even J) would still appear very white. And there are many eyeclean SI's.

Welcome to Pricescope,

Ditto Ellen''s advice, I would pass on that diamond.

Hey man...this is coming from a guy that just got engaged on New Years Eve.

From Blue Nile, I bought a:

1.02 Carat Princess Cut (round will be more expensive, so remember that)
Very Good cut
H color
VS1 Clarity
Polish - Excellent
Symmetry - Excellent

$3900

Decided to go with BN after going to jewelers and seeing how much they were charging for their diamonds. I figured if I didn''t like the diamond, I could always send it back. Got the diamond overnight (free shipping and no tax), took it and got it looked at to make sure it was legit (which it was)...found a setting that I liked ($1500) and got it set. The ring was awesome. Got it appraised and they appraised it at $10,125.

Bottom line is...I am 100% happy with what I got and was exactly what I wanted. The money that you save on the diamond, you can put towards a setting. Was nervous at first about the whole online thing but it was worth it. Let me know how it goes.

I''d use the search by cut tool here:

https://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx

Put in excellent-excellent for cut and check GIA and AGS for labs and you''ll come up with mostly ideal stones.

You won''t be able to get an ideal cut 1.25 F-G VS in the price range you''re looking at, though. I''d also suggest checking James Allen because they give a good discount for being a pricescope member, and I have observed that their prices may be lower than BN.

General parameters to look for:

table: 54-57

depth: 60-62

crown angle: 34-35

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

ok, thanks for the feedback. How would you compare it to this one from Whiteflash?

The diamond above probably isn't the best cut judging by the depth, also it isn't an in house diamond so it would have to be called in, but I would pass honestly. Use the numbers DS gave you as a guide to find some well cut round diamonds, also the search by cut tool will help you.

Listen to Ellen, Loreli and DiamondSeeker. Neither of those two diamnds are that well cut and most people around here would rank cut as the most important thing to judge a diamond by.

Everyone has been tremendously helpful - thank you!

So, I used the HCA tool with the recommended specs and found thi one. It scored a 1.1 on HCA. http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/Whiteflash-ACA-cut-diamond-1843977.htm# I''m not sure why the price on WF is higher than on Pricescope though.

Another one I like is this ''signature ideal'' from BN. http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-signature-ideal-cut-h-color-si1-clarity_LD00285039?filter_id=0 Although their website does not seem to have specs for Crown and Pavilion.

Any thoughts on these two diamonds? Also I''ve noticed ppl say ensure they are ''eyeclean''...can someone define what that means (in laymans terms)?

thx again!

for eye clean info, see here...

both diamonds would be swell. The BN option has earned a zero for light performance, so I didn''t bother to look further at the certificate...which reliably, like the one from WF, will also give angles for crown & pavilion.

The crown and pavillion angles for the BN stone are on the AGS cert on the diagram. they are 34.9 and 40.8. There is alot going on with the inclusions too (chip, cavilty, cleavage, laser drill holes etc...). i would avoid this stone.

The WF stone looks great but i see it is reserved. Did you reserve it?

Yes I did reserve it.

However, it seems to me (at least from the AGS cert) that the WF stone has a similar amount of inclusions as the BN stone, no?

Call WF and let them know you reserved this diamond and they can look at it for you and describe how "eye clean" it is.

WF has it''s own definition of eyeclean (I just bought a diamond there) see below:

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamonds_info/t/faq.aspx?articleid=403&zoneid=6

I bought a F-SI1 round 1.04 H&A that scored a 1.1 on the HCA. I wanted to drop to a G or H color but couldn''t find an SI1 that was eye clean. I decided for $800-1000 more in price it was worth it to go up to F. Some SI1''s are eye clean, some aren''t. The best advice is to see it yourself or for us online buyers to ask the vendor to describe it.

WF can also scan their inventory for what you are looking for. This will weed out non eye-clean diamonds and save you the time running HCA''s, etc.

Yes, WF verified that it is eyeclean. I''ve gone ahead and ordered it! Thank you everyone for the advice. Much appreciated!
