Thoughts on these two antique (?) marquise diamonds

I have these two on hold. I will be purchasing both and seeing them in person to decide on one to keep and one to return, but I would like some expert thoughts and opinions.

Also, do you think these are actually antique-cut stones or just have similar faceting?

PS Thanks to Niel for finding the second of the two.

That bow -tie on that first one is just way to big. Nice bow -ties don't bother me but
that one is Hugh.

The second one may have potential IMO.

I suspect that bow tie may be annoying in the first one. Though my cheap marquise has a bow tie and IRL it's very flashy. Play dark when it's up close to my face.

Sorry I didn't see. Did you request asets of them both?

I noticed that, as well. I am hoping that it is not as noticeable in person because I love the spread on it for its weight.

I didn't! Do you think I should still do so when I intend to examine them both in person anyhow? Will it give us extra info? Thanks for the suggestion - I didn't even think of that.

My other question is, are these well-priced or can I do better on antique marquise (size-wise) for these prices? I wasn't intending on getting one so high in color and wouldn't mind going lower. But, these things are hard to find!

Color over clarity is going to be important in a marquise. I think the f si1 is nice because I suspect the incisions won't be bothersome and the color is high. The color will show easier in these types of stones so actually I think it's nice you managed to find high color ones

I say this and I have a low color MQ lol. But in general I'd recommend g or higher.

And both of these stones aren't very deep. So that nice too when considering face up size.

If you want asets you could probably still ask for some. But if you're getting them home maybe just use your eyes

That's all really good to know. I've actually never seen a marquise in person, period, never mind one with this type of faceting. I could end up hating both, I guess! They are both really different shapes - one is pretty skinny and the other is chubby, and I'm not sure what I prefer.

Ha! I suppose you could hate them both. But you're smart to give them a try as I think they are a very underrated and beautiful shape!

And I thin it's nice they are priced equal to normal marquis. Not overpriced due to facetting which I do think some people might do sense it is rare.

am not expert like many here, but I'll give you my opinion anyhow  .
The second diamond has chunkier facets that do look antique to me. I also prefer it's chubbier look compared to number one.
The first one I don't care for because of that generous bow-tie. It is a very skinny marquis.

I think the second is more likely to be an antique, but with a faceted girdle it has been (at least) repolished, so who knows really.

I like the second much more than the first.

Ditto MoneyMeister and Dreamer.

I can see the appeal of the spread on the first one, but it's reaaaaaaaaaaly shallow for a marquise, and I think that will make the bow-tie more pronounced. But I love the second one - nice high crown, great chunky culet. Would love to see how you'd set it!

I should have said I like too like that f best. But as you could have probably guessed by how fast I came back with that link. I've been watching it for a while.

I'm not old cut expert but something about that F says genuine old cut to my uneducated eyes.

And yes please tell me how will you set it?? :Up_to_something:

I also think the f is an older cut, or an older style reproduction. It has a culet :) and those "chunkies" always get to me!. I wonder if it throws prismatic color... You'll have to let us know when you see it. Neil has a great question, what are you thinking of doing with it?

Again, I am not an expert like others here, but I do love old cuts and antiques for the prismatic color effect.

Ditto that bow tie hit me the second I opened the link.

I am not trying to be creepy but I have had the .70 on my JA Wishlist since another PSer got an antique marquise from JA. I have NO intention of buying it! Her ring was just divine and made me wonder if I could find an antique marquise diamond, too. I am so excited that you are going to get to see it in person :D!

Warm regards,
PattyCo

I hope it's not creepy because I've been doing it too. Lol

LOL Niel!

You know you are a PSer when....you "wishlist" a diamond and setting that matches a fellow PSers divine ring :naughty:...and then you get all excited when another PSer buys said "wishlist" diamond, lol!

Thank you everybody for your input! My eye is also drawn to the F (especially the facet pattern) more than the G. That spread on the larger stone is hard to refuse, but I think I'll see that bow tie in real life and not be so sure. I will be certain to take photos of both when I get them and would love to hear everyone's opinion.

Lol, not creepy at all! I do the same thing.

In regards to setting it - and talk about putting the cart before the horse - I am a little torn. I don't have any solitaires and would love to do something E-W like this:

But I also am an art deco enthusiast and would love a flashy dinner ring such as these:

ETA: Not married to rubies at all. These were just examples.

ihy138, those are lovely ideas for your marquise. Maybe out there in setting-land there is something that is a combination of the east/west and art deco style.

I first fell in love with the .70 because of its cutlet and chunky facets. My gosh I am so excited that I will be able to see it in your pictures! I feel like a kid 2 days before Christmas :appl: Hurry SantaFedExClause!!!!!

Oooh, good idea Patty!

And yes I too am SO excited. I love both of the diamonds already and I can't wait to see how they look all over my house and outside if I get some good weather! I'm waiting patiently!!

This is the thread that inspired me to go looking for an antique cut marquise on the James Allen website. Her setting is antique looking, though the diamond is in the usual N/S orientation.

I also tried to look on the Diamond Zone website because they have really nice art deco style rings but it says the website has been "disabled" . I can only imagine why that might be...

Holy smokes, that is a gorgeous stone.  I'm hoping I end up with at least a miniature version of that.

That's sad about Diamond Zone! Their eBay store appears to be up and running.

Oh Niel, those are beautiful! Ihy138 mentioned possible setting the marquise EW. Did you see any Art Deco marquise set that way?

There are a fee that are always floating around ps so I never thought to save them. I'll have to look.

Niel, those are stunning!! Thank you for sharing them. Patty - I've never seen an EW setting like that. I'm curious to see how it might like.

Just an update that I will be receiving the stones tomorrow and should post a new thread by the weekend with some photos. I'm hoping we get some good weather so I can get some natural light in my apartment.
