Hello all,

I have a strand of pearls I purchased many years ago that I have really enjoyed, but they are not of the best quality, and I’m ready for an upgrade. I inquired with Takahashi, requesting a strand of their highest quality akoyas, 9-9.5 mm, with slight rose overtones without any green. They sent me photos of their best available strand. I haven’t purchased pearls of this caliber before, and I would really appreciate your opinions! Thanks! 899EF265-F1D0-4CDB-A1AB-3E1088B67968.jpeg

EDIT. What grade did they give these? If you're paying $$ then I'd personally be willing to wait for the best possible strand.

With a 9-9.5mm I imagine availability is somewhat limited, just because of how large the pearls are! So "best of this size" may not represent "best of akoya".
I don't know if that's the case - I've got no insider insight beyond the general understanding that 9mm is reaching akoya size limits. Just putting it out there for your awareness.

I personally would ask for the most lustrous strand possible and trust Takahashi to choose it ::)

Thank you, that is so helpful! I will ask if there are any 8.5-9.0 mm strands that would be overall more lustrous/higher quality.

There may not be! Just so I’m being super transparent - I honestly have no idea.

But I do think it makes sense to open the field up to the next size down if you’d happy happy in that size bracket, the more they’ve got to choose from for you the better!

Okay, I asked about pearls in the 8.5-9 mm size range as well. Any thoughts on these? In the photos with multiple strands, the top strand is the original one. The third strand with granpearl certificate is out of my price range. Any clear favorite between 1, 2, and 4?

My eyes prefer one of the bottom 3 strands (not the tennyo), particularly the 9x9.5mm gem even though it has some spots. Second for me is the smaller gem strand I think. My choice may depend on the price difference between those strands as I see some are certed.

My eyes agree with yours! The tennyo is my least favorite of the 4

I like #4 - seems to be a better color match. #2 is a close second and I do love the delicately pinked color and size. Either look lovely so maybe comes down to size/price

Tenyo is also least fave
