Hi all-

Thanks very much for the thoughtful responses to my last post. I certainly learned alot. I am looking at a 2.84 carat diamond, H VS1. I noticed that the GIA report says issued in 10/99.

Should it concern me that: 1) the diamond was obtained through consignment or auction, or 2) the diamond really sat in inventory that long, etc.? What does this typically mean?

and if anyone still has the patience.... thoughts on this diamond??

Round 2.84 H VS1
9.01*9.07*5.68

Depth: 62.8%
Table 57%
Girdle: mediumn to slightly thick, faceted
Culet: very small

Polish/ Sym: very good / very good

Fluor: none

thanks so much

I would not have a problem with a 20 year old cert (it might actually be stricter).

But you must have the stone examined by an expert appraiser to ensure there has been no subsequent damage.

A cert is designed to last forever.

The total depth is a bit deep, but that may be all right if the pavilion and crown angle measurements are within the right range, we imagine that you don't have that information or you would have posted it...

A four year old diamond grading report is not necessarily reason for concern, but it is a red flag worthy of consideration... Either send the diamond back through the GIA for "verification" or have the diamond evaluated by an independent gemologist to ensure that the diamond has not been damaged and that the characteristics match those stated on the lab report... It is quite possible that the diamond has been sitting for four years simply because of the total depth, but then is that a reason for you to buy it now?
