Hey Everyone,

I think I am set on a engagement ring, but I wanted a second opinion here because you all steered me away from a ring in the past that wasn't really the right one. I was looking for a 3 stone ring in platinum. I just had the center stone of an estate ring certified by EGL New York and here is the following:

2.19 Ct
Round Brilliant Cut
Measurements: 8.51 - 8.47 x 4.99mm

Proportions

Depth 58.8%
Table 62%
Crown 12.5%
Pavilion 43.7%
Girdle: Medium to SL Thick Faceted
Cutlet: None

Finish
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good

Clarity:SI1
Color: F

Flourescence: None

I love the ring it also has what looks to be round half carats on either side.

I wanted to see what the thoughts were on the diamond quality as well as if 15k was a good price to be at for this ring.

Thanks in advance.

Is it a modern round brilliant? It scores a 3.2 on the HCA - worth it if the price is right. Personally I'd pass, but that's just me. You did say you loved it... and that's what matters.

If you love the stone, then ignore the HCA score because "the price was right"!! FWIW, I love three stones, and I think the ratio of the center to the side stones is good as well. :D

I do not like this for the following reasons

EGL certificate means its very hard to compare colour/clarity grades

table to depth ratio seems off to me.

To answer the question. It doesnt look like a modern round brilliant, I take it thats why it doesnt have a cut grade? Pardon my ignorance I am a consumer and never thought of the HCA as well. I have looked at a lot of stones over the past 6 months and this ring really stands out to me. I just want to make sure that I am doing a fair deal for a quality stone. With all the information out there it is easy to get lost.

Thanks for the help.

What we'd say is that it is not an excellent cut stone, and it is hard for us to recommend diamonds that are not, since this is a diamond education forum. Also, EGL is loose in grading, and I assume this diamond was evaluated in the setting which makes it even more iffy. Price sounds okay as long as you understand that the color and clarity is likely lower than EGL said and that you don't mind getting a diamond that is not excellent cut.

Can you show us some close up shots of the ring? We might be able to give much better opinions if you do.

It is hard to tell much from those pictures. From my viewpoint, the table on the center stone is huge, which means little of the crown shows. It would not be a diamond that I would consider unless the price was so low that it would be worth recutting to a 1.5 ct stone or something. However, if the recipient wants a large diamond and knows nothing about cut quality, it might be something she would like to have. I always recommend getting the best quality possible, but some people choose size over quality, and I understand that.
