I am definitely a diamond newbie, but think I have come across a fairly good diamond at a decent price. Can anyone give their opinion on this diamond? Is this a good diamond? What do you think a fair price would be?

Round Brilliant
1.82 carat
7.87  x 7.79 x 4.83

H&A (I saw both under the scope-looks like perfect arrows and hearts to me)

Depth: 61.7
Table: 58
Crown: 34.7 degrees
Pavilion: 40.9 degrees

EGL USA Cert

J, SI2 Ideal Plus Cut Grade

Looks beautifully white in person. I cannot see inclusions with the naked eye looking down on it. There ia a cloudy spot when looking from te bottom. I have not see it in pure daylight.

In case this is necessary-

Polish: very good
Symmetry: very good

Thanks for the help!

Have you compared it to a GIA J? How much is it? I'm on my phone so what is the HCA and AGA score?

HCA score is 1.9 - Total Visual Performance 1.9 - Excellent
within TIC range

Thanks for posting the HCA scores!

I have seen it next to 2 GIA J diamonds and they all look the same to me in terms of color, but I am by no means qualified to even say that.

It's priced at $8,600 right now.

I've found an I VS2 (1.8 carat) ex cut on Blue Nile. It's GIA Graded and listed at 20k$. I don't know how a J SI2 would compare in terms of pricing but the quote you were given seems quite low...too low maybe?

How much were the GIA stones you were shown?

They were in the same price range, but we're smaller and had better clarity. I was guessing that the lower price was due to the fact that this is an EGL cert.

If you look at recent threads on this forum you will find a lot of threads involving EGL...they are known for being less consistant than other labs (namely GIA/AGS) so when you buy a J SI2 EGL stone it may be a K or even L/M SI3 stone.

That explains why they are cheaper most of the times, their certs are not reliable. In the end you pay for what you get, meaning that when an EGL stone is much cheaper it doesn't mean you got a great deal but that it has lower color and/or clarity,cut...

It's best to stick to GIA/AGS graded stones, much safer.

What is your price range?

Thanks for the replies!

I am mainly trying to determine if this stone is worth the price that is being asked. I really like it and it looks gorgeous in person and in a setting. It's very clean to the eye and the H&A are clearly visible. I understand that it may be of lower color and clarity than it says on the report. However, it seems that the cut is actually pretty good. And it seems like the cut on it is making it look much better than it might look on paper? Would that be accurate?

My price range is somewhere around $8,000-9,000.

I think the best way to determine if you are paying a fair price is to run a search with an online vendor that sells EGL stones and compare the one you are considering with others with like specs. I think bluenile and union diamond both sell EGL and I believe that ID Jewelry does as well? You'll have to consider that you will probably be paying more through a BM than you would be online as well due to the cost of overhead, so take that into consideration.

Please take the time to visit the stone again and inspect it in a variety of lighting types - the spotlights, sure, but also sunlight, the diffuse brightness by a window, the back-office lights,

Not really, no. A well-cut stone of exactly these specs will sparkle more than a poorly cut stone of these specs, and the proportions and optical symmetry determine quantity and type of light return, and the numbers on the paper give us some idea about the proportions...

Can you post a plot diagram at least? Photos would be better.

I don't have a good photo, but can get one soon.

Here is a photo anyways. Diamond in question is on the left. The other 2 diamonds are GIA cert J color.

Also posted is the diagram from the report.

try asking to see the diamonds against a gray/neutral background. I've read/seen that black backgrounds actually make the diamonds appear brighter than they are.

Here is what I got yesterday. Very difficult to capture with an iPhone! I also saw it in daylight and it looks the same as the GIA J-no warmth or yellow as far as I can tell.

Dimaond is on the RIGHT.

IMO based on the numbers and images the cut looks pretty good. Assuming the images are accurate I would not consider this a H&A. The hearts look wonky as well as some of the arrows. But as long as you are OK with that and like what you see I think it's worth considering. The problem is that EGL grading is all over the place and not consistent with the AGS/GIA scale. IMO there's no way any of us can give you any idea of a fair price, until you ask the vendor to get a AGS/GIA report for the stone or at the very least seek out the opinion of an independent appraiser for the stone's potential AGS/GIA grade.

Thanks for your opinion!! I appreciate it! I wouldn't necessarily consider the H&A photos to be accurate. It was very difficult to take a photo looking down the scope with an iPhone. Getting in at the right angle to snap the shot was near impossible. The hearts and arrows are clearer in person, although it is not that important to me in the long run.
