I read an article about a study of relatively low IQ people versus those of above average IQ. At issue was their self-perception. It was found that people with lower IQ perceived themselves to have a higher IQ, while those of above average and high IQ perceived themselves to be average or only slightly above average. The most interesting finding was that people of Extremely low IQ felt that they had an Extremely high IQ, grossly out of proportion to the guesses of the other respondents.

I think some of that is manifested by this woman . . .

I have to believe it's scripted. I just HAVE to. Otherwise I just... how could he marry someone so dumb, and how could she marry someone who doesn't respect her? I don't get it! If they're a two-person comedy act and she's just PLAYING dumb, that's different. Except, wait, they're Mormon. Which actually explains a whole lot. I've seen enough Mormon relationships like that in real life to no longer be surprised.

My sister is a speech-language pathologist and is currently working with a teenage girl like this. She does not understand sarcasm, or jokes of any kind. She simply does not understand humor. She has a normal IQ but has been diagnosed with a non-Autism spectrum social disorder. I wonder if 'Donna the Deer Lady' has something similar. My sister has had to explain all kinds of things to her clients, including where leather and meat comes from, why dogs don't need haircuts, why you can't make $100k a year without a high school diploma, and so on. These kids really, sincerely do not understand some of these things, and it is MIND BLOWING to them when my sister explains. They just never considered the question before. It sounds very similar to Donna's defense "I grew up in a small North Dakota town, so when I moved to Fargo, it just never occurred to me that the deer crossing signs were for HUMANS and not for the deer."
