I wasn’t planning to post my Cortez pearl until the setting was well underway, but ultimately came to my senses. Without sounding immodest, it’d be a disservice to my fellow PSers not to share before this harvest’s beauts are all snapped up. I’ve been obsessed with the little dude since he landed on my doorstep and have been so impressed with the farm’s customer service and willingness to educate.
I initially hoped to buy one of the 2022 Top 10, as I regrettably was too late to the party last year. But this pearl called out to me more than any of the Top 10 (at least those that remained at the time of my purchase). And a couple particularly sage friends advised me to strike while the iron was hot!
It’s what the farm photographer referred to as “unofficial Top 20.” I’d speculate that it didn’t make the cut due to a combination of “rebellious” shape (his words), uneven luster (my observation), slight surface imperfections and lack of size to make up for those factors. But it sure is plenty colorful — far and away my main priority!
This bad boy was center stage in the first photo of the harvest, sorted out as one of the early special finds. It’s just shy of 11mm, with an estimated nacre thickness of 1.25-1.5mm, based on the nucleus size they recalled (i.e., pretty average for an SoC). It hails from a lab oyster — the first-ever batch of those bodacious babes.

Until I incorporate it into a proper piece of jewelry, I’ve been enjoying this weird little pebble as a cuddle buddy, gleefully rolling it around in my palm at all hours. And, much to my nurse injector’s chagrin, absent mindedly duck-facing to cradle it in my cupid’s bow for the entirety of Fboy Island marathons.

Those bands of colour are just unreal. So bright and so cleanly delineated. You can see them clearly in your photos as well - it really is a rainbow pearl 
Just with a non-prismatic colour sequence I guess.
