The most bizarre encounter EVER at a jewellery store while trying to hunt for a setting

Hi Folks!

I had the most crazy experience today while looking for a setting for my 5.9mm emerald. No stones were harmed in this process. Thought I'd get that out of the way first.

So I was heading off to this far away suburb with my little sister to eat chicken with crispy skin and soup noodle (not relevant but it was yum) and the store with cheap settings that I keep talking about was in this suburb. I thought there was no harm in going in to see what the prices for each setting was and if they could set my emerald for me. I wanted to see how much more I was paying in Sydney CBD.

Oh boy was I wrong! Now these people specialise in diamonds and I get that not everyone is familiar with coloured stones but.......lets say there were some screws loose in there.

Went in, was greeted by the boss. As he was the jeweller for the store I showed him my emerald. Told him it was an EMERALD and therefore a lot SOFTER than diamonds so I was wondering if he would set it for me if I purchased a setting from the store. I also told him that I understand a lot of jewellers do not deal with coloured stones so if he doesn't then that's fine, I'll go on my merry way.

He told me he can set anything and proceeded to examine my emerald. Asked if he could take pictures of it. I didn't mind so let him. He examined it for a good 5 mins and then asked me: Why does your emerald not sparkle?

Me: It's an emerald, they don't really sparkle. They glow more.

Him: I could get you that stone for a lot cheaper.

Me: Well I like this stone.

Him: It's not sparkling because it's just the scraps from cutting.

Me: I think you're confused because emeralds do not sparkle.

Him: That is a badly cut diamond. I can get you a green diamond. Green diamonds are cheap.

Me: IT'S NOT A DIAMOND!!!! Clearly you're confused so that's fine. I'm just going to leave now.

Him - Shoves a bunch of GIA reports into my hand : Read this and guess the prices. I can get you a green diamond EXACTLY like the one you brought in for cheap.

Me - Gives him a look like he is insane: THIS IS NOT A DIAMOND! It is an emerald. Do you understand that in nature there are OTHER stones besides diamonds?

Him: Read the GIA report and tell me how much you think that stone costs. You want that stone? I can get you that stone. I have a HUGE network of suppliers.

Me: But it is an I1 Fancy Greenish Brown. It's probably ugly! I don't want it!

Him: Fine! I'll get you the exact stone that you brought in today. Exactly like that.

Me: But a diamond CANNOT look like an emerald. I think you are confused. Diamonds and emeralds are DIFFERENT things.

Him - Points to my Jeff Davies Chrysoberyl (at this point I am thanking the lord that Jeff Davies exists to sell me coloured stones and make custom settings for me because this dude was freaking me out): How much did you pay for that yellow diamond?

Me: It's not a yellow diamond. It's a chrysoberyl. You DO NOT understand that there are OTHER stones in nature besides diamonds. And I am leaving now.

Flees out of the store for dear life with little sister in tow.

***

Back to the shop in Sydney CBD from now on! Or get JD to make my settings! No more crazies!

Hehe here's a pic of what I ate!

That chicken is some good stuff!!!!! I am always SO jubilant when I go to that restaurant and place my order. But after I finish my meal I'm so sad because even though I just had a big serve, I'm still craving more but I know I must wait until next time!

That type of encounter would have freaked me out. I enjoy learning new facts from I’m vendors. I have definitely caught some spouting out misinformation, but your experience takes the cake!! This guy sounds just plain ignorant and pushy. I love diamond jewelry just as much as the next person, but there is a whole world of gorgeous colored gems out there. This dude needs a gemstone education!

How obnoxious. I bet his sales "tactic" works more often than we imagine though. :wall:

You should have asked him how much he would pay you in cash for the 'yellow diamond' on your finger ;))

Very amusing. I'm guessing he knew better, but thought that you didn't, and would fall for his scam.

Wow! I would have been so frustrated! :eek-2: Goes to show you that just because someone sells jewelry, it doesn't mean they actually know anything about it. o_O

At least you got a good meal out of that awful experience.

@elle_71125 Even my 5yo knows the basics. I am actually super intrigued at what is going on in this man's mind. Cuz I don't think he realises that an emerald is a different stone altogether.

@MeowMeow yes it's definitely made me appreciate the guys in the city who actually know what a tourmaline is!!!!!

He did take a lot of photos of my emerald. I think he wants to compare it to something later. I'm kinda laughing at the thought of him going to search for a green diamond in that colour. One at bargain prices at that.

Where is this delicious meal from?! my DH is visiting his BF in Sydney in a week's time so I'd love to be able to point them to somewhere out of the way and delicious. I won't be suggesting they visit that store tho - that guy sounds seriously nuts!!

Tan Viet Noodle House
Shop 2-3, 100 John Street, Cabramatta, Sydney
Phone: 02 9727 6853

Be prepared to queue up if you arrive after 11am. There are LOTS of excellent asian eats in this suburb if he's interested! The suburb is a bit out of the way though but you can catch a train or drive there!

I was just going to say do I win a prize if I guess Sydney's Western suburbs? Before you wrote that, Parramatta was my first guess and Cabramatta my second :) Moral of the story stay away from vendors who do not know the difference between a diamond and an emerald.

I actually have a friend that thinks all gemstones are diamonds. I don't expect a jeweler to be as equally ignorant about gemstones. :confused2:

You would think that as a jeweller at the very LEAST you can identify the big 3.
Even my 5yo knows the difference between various gems!!!

Funny story: He's always loved coloured gems, especially emeralds, peridot and jade (green is his favourite colour) and pretty much ignored diamonds for a long time. I assume it's because they had no distinctive colour and I never wore my yellow diamond out with him.

One day during an outing while I was sporting my round brilliant diamond (I think he might have been 4 at that time) the kid stops in his tracks and pulls me aside to have a "quiet conversation".

Kid (whispers): Mummy! What's that stone you have today?

Me (shows him the diamond): This one?

Kid: Yes! I REALLY like it! It's got all sorts of rainbow colours but not one colour like the others.

Me: It's a diamond. Have I not told you all about diamonds?

Kid: I thought they were just the clear stones around all your nice coloured ones.

Me - Explains about diamonds for most of our train ride home.

He always whispers and has "quiet conversations" when he asks about my jewellery because from a very young age I told him never to talk about Mummy's jewellery to anyone else

Aw bless! what a wee love! :kiss2: I love that he thought diamonds were just the boring accent stones :lol-2:
Thank you for the restaurant name/location, it looks so delicious. I wish I was visiting with him just to eat this.
