Quick question: How much do temporary gold settings run? Im looking to mount a 1 carat princess. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not positive, but I would guess around $150 for a very simple gold setting. When I purchased my diamond, the jeweler agreed to set it in a plain gold setting for no additional charge just so I could wear it and make the setting decision at a later time.

I figured it would be cheaper to get a temporary gold setting. My b/f wants to go down the much harder route. He wants to buy the setting, put a smaller diamond in it and when we decide to upgrade the diamond, to replace the whole head of the ring. I'm trying to talk him into getting the diamond and putting it into a temporary setting and later on down the line, replacing it with a setting that I choose.

So who's right on this one?

Hey, it depends on whate is more important to both of you? As you are the one that is going to be wearing the ring, I would say, what is your choice?
I know that changing the setting is a fairly easy thing to do, but I am not sure how hard it is to change the setting head for a larger one if you upgrade the diamond. I guess it depends more on the type of setting that you get.
I know that I for one got a temporary setting and proposed with a simple solitare setting. (around $150) Now my problem is that I want to upgrade it to the setting I had my eye on, but she won't let me! (Doesn't want to have the ring off her finger for longer than a few minutes.)
I say, find the diamond that you like, then upgrade the setting when you have time/$$

BF should keep in mind that if you go hard and fast on the setting now and upgrade the size of diamond later, the new stone may not fit in the old set. Take note on various sites as to how rings and mounts are listed to fit a specific size range of diamond. Reworking an existing ring to fit a larger diamond can also require a skilled metal smith. If you are giving serious consideration to a permanent platinum setting, a good platinum smith will be much harder to find than a good gold smith.
